Ivy Talks is a platform for scholars from the Ivy Tech community to present their research to the public and have their research published in a database that will be accessible to greater academic communities.

Each month, Ivy Tech Community College will host a different speaker and invite the community to attend for free.

Next Talk:

Wednesday, March 24, 2021 | 6 p.m. - 7 p.m.
LIVE on Facebook: @ivytechvalpo

Featured Speaker: Jon Aros
Topic: The 2017 Solar Eclipse

Jon Aros received a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Purdue University in 1999 and has focused on a master’s field of advanced organic chemistry, specifically polymers and retro-synthesis. He hopes to one day obtain his PhD in both subjects and work for NASA. Jon is a certified environmental chemist who has also earned the highest level of certification in waste water treatment over the past 23 years. Jon is a passionate astronomer with interests in phenomena of the universe, astrophotography, archaic astronomy, and the space program.

Jon has taught chemistry and astronomy for 20 years bringing 30 years of experience to both subjects.  Jon has taught at Ivy Tech Community College in Valparaiso since 2016. He is always eager to share his expertise. Jon’s proficiency in astronomy allows him to work on a research telescope in the local area. His enthusiasm fueled a personal project which drew him to the path of totality, or the shadow cast upon the Earth by the Moon during a total solar eclipse, in 2017.

Aros is preparing several more projects which include meteor showers, the 2024 solar eclipse, and heightened solar activity throughout the later part of the new decade.
