Certified Lead Renovator (Refresher)

EMI classes are only available through the Indianapolis Ivy Tech campus at this time. For more information, contact Indianapolis-EMI@ivytech.edu.

Contractors and maintenance professionals who disturb painted surfaces in pre-1978 housing or child-occupied facilities must hold a current EPA Lead Renovator certification. This refresher course, delivered under the supervision of the Ivy Tech Environmental Management Institute (Indianapolis), provides the training required to renew that credential before it expires.

Federal regulations define target housing as most U.S. homes built before 1978, and child-occupied facilities as pre-1978 buildings where young children regularly spend time. Anyone supervising renovation, repair, or painting activities that disturb more than a de minimis amount of paint in these settings must maintain a valid Renovator certification.

This course reviews:

  • Key EPA and HUD requirements for lead-safe renovation
  • Updated regulatory guidance and recordkeeping rules
  • Practical lead-safe work practices
  • Critical elements of containment, cleaning, and verification
  • Supervisor responsibilities and communication requirements

This refresher is open only to individuals with a current, unexpired Renovator certificate. Successful completion renews your EPA certification and allows you to continue supervising renovation, repair, and painting projects in target housing and child-occupied facilities.

Upon successful completion of this refresher course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe recent updates to EPA Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) rules and HUD requirements affecting renovation activities.
  • Review and reinforce core concepts from the initial Renovator training, including hazard identification and regulatory thresholds.
  • Apply current lead-safe work practices, including containment, dust control, surface preparation, and cleanup protocols.
  • Demonstrate proper cleaning verification procedures and recognize when clearance testing is required.
  • Complete required documentation and recordkeeping to remain compliant with EPA and HUD standards.
  • Communicate effectively with residents, property managers, and work crews regarding lead hazards and renovation safety.
  • Maintain EPA Renovator credentials through successful course completion and examination.

Employee registration is coordinated by the Program Manager supporting your training. Depending on the course, employees may register in person, through an organization-provided roster, or via a self-registration link. Your Program Manager will guide you through the best option for your specific training.
