Lead Inspector (Refresher)

EMI classes are only available through the Indianapolis Ivy Tech campus at this time. For more information, contact Indianapolis-EMI@ivytech.edu.

This refresher course, delivered under the supervision of the Ivy Tech Environmental Management Institute (EMI), ensures that Lead Inspectors maintain the knowledge and competency required to evaluate lead-based paint hazards in target housing and child-occupied facilities. EPA and HUD regulations require accredited Lead Inspectors to stay current with evolving standards, work practices, and reporting expectations.

The EMI Lead Inspector Refresher provides:

  • Updates on federal, state, and local regulations
  • Enhanced inspection techniques and best practices
  • A review of foundational concepts from initial certification
  • Open discussion and problem-solving with experienced lead professionals

This refresher is required for maintaining certification under:

  • U.S. EPA regulations (40 CFR 745 Subpart L)
  • U.S. HUD regulations (24 CFR 35) for inspections and clearance examinations

Participants must hold a current, unexpired Lead Inspector certification to enroll. Completion of the course and passing the required exam fulfills the training requirement for renewing your accreditation. State licensing agencies may impose additional renewal steps, such as fees, documentation, or continuing education requirements.

Upon successful completion of the Lead Inspector Refresher, participants will be able to:

  • Describe recent updates to EPA and HUD regulations affecting lead inspections and clearance examinations.
  • Reinforce foundational knowledge from the initial Lead Inspector training, including hazard identification and sampling principles.
  • Apply current best practices for XRF testing, paint chip sampling, dust sampling, and visual assessments.
  • Interpret laboratory results and updated analytical protocols in accordance with federal standards.
  • Prepare compliant inspection documentation, including updated reporting elements and recordkeeping requirements.
  • Recognize common inspection challenges and apply appropriate troubleshooting strategies.
  • Maintain certification eligibility by completing refresher training and passing the required course exam.

Employee registration is coordinated by the Program Manager supporting your training. Depending on the course, employees may register in person, through an organization-provided roster, or via a self-registration link. Your Program Manager will guide you through the best option for your specific training.
