How Ivy Tech Helped IT Alum Launch Career Supporting Meta’s Data Centers

As Ivy Tech celebrates School of Information Technology Month, alumnus Christopher Allen Whitney shows how an accessible, high-quality education with affordable pathways, meaningful attainment, and strong workforce alignment can empower students to achieve their goals and build successful careers in the ever-evolving world of technology. Today, Whitney works as a Data Center Technician with CBRE supporting Meta, where he helps maintain the infrastructure that powers critical digital operations.

For Whitney, the decision to pursue information technology stemmed from a lifelong fascination with the way technology continues to evolve and shape the world around us.

"I have always been amazed by technology and how quickly it continues to grow and change," Whitney said. "I became interested in learning more about how technology works, how far it can go, and how it can be used to make our lives better."

When it came time to choose a college, Ivy Tech stood out for its ability to provide an affordable and accessible pathway into a growing field. The opportunity to earn an associate degree while developing practical, workforce-ready skills made it the right fit for Whitney.

Like many students, Whitney balanced coursework with the demands of everyday life. The accelerated pace of Ivy Tech's eight-week courses challenged him to develop strong organizational and time-management skills.

"At times, it felt like having another full-time job," Whitney said. "I had to learn how to manage my time, stay organized, and remain focused on my goal."

With that, however, Whitney said he found support from several faculty members and staff throughout his Ivy Tech journey. 

“I had several mentors and professors at Ivy Tech who had a major influence on me, including Natasha, Professor B, Professor Ford, Professor Davis, and Professor Hampton. They taught me so much and were always willing to share their time, knowledge, and wisdom with me. Their encouragement and support played an important part in helping me get to where I am today,” Whitney said. 

Outside the classroom, Whitney, although not a veteran himself, was actively involved with the Veterans Club, where he enjoyed supporting veteran students and learning from their experiences. He also took advantage of campus resources, spending hours studying in the library and utilizing the Tutoring Center to strengthen his understanding of course material.

The knowledge and technical skills he gained through Ivy Tech's School of Information Technology continue to support his success today. His career path reflects the strong alignment between Ivy Tech's IT curriculum and the workforce needs of today's technology employers, preparing graduates for in-demand roles across the industry.

Among his proudest accomplishments is earning his associate degree, a major milestone in his education and personal growth.

"There was a time when I wasn't sure if I would ever be able to accomplish something like that," Whitney said. "Even today, I sometimes look at my degree and think about everything it took to get there. It reminds me that hard work and determination can take you farther than you may think."

Whitney plans to continue advancing his education and career while pursuing his long-term goal of becoming a network engineer. Looking back on his experience, he encourages others who may be considering a future in technology to take the first step.

"You never know where an opportunity in technology may take you," Whitney said. "Keep learning, stay curious, and don't be afraid to try something new."
