Placement Testing
To plan your classes effectively, the Assessment Center provides academic assessment of all prospective students. Specifically, prospective students are tested for reading, writing, and math skills for appropriate course placement. All incoming students must be assessed prior to enrolling into classes. Your assessment scores will assist advisors in making sure that you are placed into the appropriate classes - the classes in which you will be most successful.
You will need to schedule an assessment test if you are a new college student. You will take ACCUPLACER, a computerized assessment method. The ACCUPLACER test is an adaptive, untimed test. If you have taken the SAT or ACT within the past four years and achieved a verbal score of 460 and a math score of 460, your assessment may be waived. ACT scores of 19 or higher on the reading, English, and math portions will waive the assessment test.
If you meet the requirement in only one area, you may qualify for a partial test substitution. For example – if your SAT verbal score is higher than 460, but your math is lower, you may have the English portion of the test waived. You will then be required to take the math test.
You may qualify for a substitution if you have completed college level English and Math courses at an accredited college or university. You may also be waived of the assessment test if you have an Associate's degree or higher from an accredited college or university. A partial substitution will be granted if you have completed college coursework in either English or Math. You will then be required to the take a portion of the test.
You may see your Academic Advisor for a substitution. Please be sure to bring a copy of your SAT or ACT scores with you. The Advising Center is open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you have further questions, feel free to call the Advising Center staff.
The ACCUPLACER Test
What is ACCUPLACER?
The ACCUPLACER test focuses on math, writing, and reading skills. It is unique in that it adapts to your abilities. ACCUPLACER was developed to help your academic advisor place you into courses that will benefit you.
Who takes ACCUPLACER?
All students entering Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana will go through an initial assessment. For most students this is done by taking the ACCUPLACER test.
Mathematics Test
The mathematics test includes questions using numbers, text, and graphics. Questions may be at the pre-algebra, basic algebra, or college algebra level and will adjust to your current skill level. Calculators and scratch paper are provided.
Writing Skills Test
The writing skills test presents essays that contain any number of errors and you are instructed to edit the essay and find all of the errors. After you finish editing the essay you will be given some questions to answer about the essay as a whole.
Reading Skills Test
The reading skills test will present you with an essay to read and give you questions to answer about the essay. You could have up to seven different essays with questions about each one. Be sure to read the entire passage before answering questions.
For samples of test questions please go to http://www.studyguidezone.com/pdfs/accuplacerteststudyguide.pdf
Under Assessments click › ACCUPLACER®ESL/e-write. On the left side of the screen click › Sample Questions
These questions are similar to those you will encounter on the ACCUPLACER exam.

Prior Learning Assessment
Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) is a way to discover whether or not your prior life experiences and achievements can be translated into course credit towards a degree at Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana. PLA credit is credit granted for learning accomplished outside of and prior to your college enrollment. It is the process used by the college to determine whether the skills claimed by a student can be reasonably validated through demonstrations, documentation, and valid certifications. It is simply another way of building a transcript with the appropriate type and amount of credit for earning a degree in a program.
People may earn certifications for technical and professional skills. Examples of this might include “Emergency First Responder”, “NOVELL Administrator”, “MS-NETWORK Administrator”, “Certified Professional Secretary”, and “Certified Public Accountant”. Clearly, some of these certifications require a great deal of work and learning, and almost all of them are validated by completion of a test, apprenticeship, or cooperative work experience. Not surprisingly, once a specific certification is earned the recipient may discover that many of the skills and processes mastered in earning that certification are also part of various college-level coursework. Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana has analyzed a number of these certifications and identified specific course objectives and/or entire courses that would be satisfied by the earning of specific certifications. The list of these certifications and the college work that they relate to is identified in the Certification Crosswalk. This document may be viewed at: http://www.ivytech.edu/pla/CertCrosswalkSept2012.pdf
A valid and current certification will provide authentication for a skill set. There are other ways to authenticate competencies, including: records of completion of workplace training; documented examples of your work; documented success in apprenticeships; workplace development; training programs for military, civil service, AmeriCorps, Peace Corp, VISTA ; seminars and workshops put on by employers, schools, community agencies, etc. The key is to be able to provide documentation (proof) of what was taught, proof that you were successful at it, and proof that it applies towards one or more specific course objectives.
An online self-paced tutorial can guide you through the process of assembling a portfolio and submitting it throug hhe appropriate channels for assessment of your life experiences and achievements. The tutorial is available at http://www.ivytech.edu/pla/
