Home-based food vendors will soon be required to have a ServSafe™ certificate.
The courses listed as "ServSafe Food Handler" are half-day courses for anyone who needs basic food safety and food handling training, including home-based vendors, food service workers, volunteers, or others who work with food who only need the basic training. The ServSafe Food Handler course is NOT intended for foodservice managers.

CATALOG DESCRIPTION: This course will help students learn basic principles of sanitation and safety in order to maintain a safe and healthy food service environment. At the end of the course the students will take the ServSafe Food Handler exam.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Recognize symptoms common to food borne illnesses and how these illnesses can be prevented and spread.
- Demonstrate knowledge of good personal hygiene and health habits.
- Understand acceptable procedures when preparing potentially hazardous foods to include time/temperature principles
- Identify three-compartment sink standards and dishwasher standards when in use.
- Identify cross-contamination and food allergen issues and safety.
- Recognize the requirements for proper receiving and storage of raw, frozen, and prepared foods.
- Identify proper methods of waste disposal.
- Differentiate signs of pest infestation.
- Understand cleaning and sanitizing procedures for equipment and facilities.

Ivy Tech cannot guarantee that any student will pass a certification or licensing exam. Your success will be determined by several factors beyond the instruction you are given in the classroom including your test-taking skills, your willingness to study outside of class, and your satisfactory completion of appropriate practice exams. Certification and licensure exam questions are drawn from databases of hundreds of possible questions; therefore, a thorough understanding of the subject matter is required. Ivy Tech’s coursework is designed to assist you in understanding the material sufficiently to provide a firm foundation for your studies as you prepare for the exam.
