Testing Services

Ivy Tech Testing Services

Welcome to the Ivy Tech Community College’s Testing Services. We provide exam administration and related services to prospective students, current students, community members, businesses and other groups throughout Indiana.

Testing Services offers on-campus and virtual proctoring for proctored exams.  Beginning Summer of 2023, Testing Services will partner with SmarterProctoring to offer new scheduling and virtual proctoring options. Knowledge Base (KB) articles are available for students. All scheduling and testing will be contained in IvyLearn.

Mission Statement

To operate as a world-class test center network providing high-quality, demand-driven testing services to prospective and current students, employers and the local community.

Supports outcome measurement by providing an opportunity for students and the workforce at large to validate skills, knowledge learned and to obtain portable, industry recognized credentials. Testing Services adheres to the NCTA Professional Standards and Guidelines.

The types of exam administration we offer include:

  • Proctored exams for designated Ivy Tech classes
  • Exam proctoring for national colleges and universities
  • Certification and professional licensure testing
  • Indiana state agencies (IDEM, IDOH, IDHS, IDOI)
  • Support for local community testing needs
  • Credit for Prior Learning exams (CLEP, DSST)

What is Proctoring?

  • A location dedicated to administering exams. Ivy Tech (Testing Services) has many testing centers to meet the needs of students, non-students and the local community.

  • A candidate is a person (student or non-student) who utilizes a testing center to take an exam.

  • A proctor is a person who will observe a candidate while the candidate takes an exam. Proctors serve a lot of different functions, but at the very least a proctor will verify the candidate’s identity by checking their government issued identification. The proctor will provide the candidate with exam instructions that were provided to the proctor and will monitor the candidate during the exam to ensure that those instructions are followed. A proctor is responsible for:

    • Ensuring exam security and candidate confidentiality
    • Providing a distraction-free environment
    • Ensuring exams are administered in a consistent and impartial manner to promote exam integrity and validity of results
  • Examples include: An instructor may want to have a student use a proctor for taking an exam in a distance education class, when a student needs to make up an exam that was missed during class or for specialized certification or high stakes exams where the requirements of the exam mandate special professional development and/or training requirements for the proctor.

  • In most cases for Ivy Tech exams, yes. Ivy Tech provides proctoring services through the testing centers at most of its campuses. Proctoring provided at these centers is free to Ivy Tech students enrolled in an Ivy Tech course who are taking an Ivy Tech exam. Knowledge Base (KB) articles are available for students. All scheduling and testing will be contained in IvyLearn.

Exams that are hosted by third-party credentialing agencies or other high-stakes exams may have additional fees. Some of these fees may be included in student tuition for specific courses.

Students who are not able to test at an Ivy Tech location because they live out of state, are unable to drive to another location, or who have scheduling issues that prevent use of a free Ivy Tech testing center do have additional proctoring options. These are explained below.

  • Yes, for designated academic exams.  Ivy Tech offers on-campus and virtual proctoring optionsfor no additional cost.  Ivy Tech Testing Services has partnered with SmarterProctoring to offer additional virtual exam appointments, a fee will apply. Knowledge Base (KB) articles are available for students. All scheduling and testing will be contained in IvyLearn.

  • Students taking a digital exam (example: IvyOnline, MyMathLab, etc) would test in a virtual location with an Ivy Tech or SmarterProctoring proctor.    Students taking a paper/pencil exam would need to use an approved National College Testing Association (NCTA) Proctoring Network testing center.  These locations will appear when you schedule your paper/pencil academic exam. Knowledge Base (KB) articles are available for students. All scheduling and testing will be contained in IvyLearn.

What to expect at a Testing Center

  • You should always bring your valid – unexpired – government issued photo ID with you.  Check with your instructor or third-party exam sponsor as applicable to your situation. This is important because arriving without required ID or documentation could result in not being able to take the exam.

  • Items Not Allowed: (This list is not all inclusive. Other items that are deemed to cause distraction to other candidates or put exam security at risk may be prohibited):

    • Watches, Fitbits, Cellphone, Backpacks, Purses, Wallets, Bags, Sunglasses, Food or Drink, Loose Change, Personal Scratch Paper, Pencils, Pens, Tissues, Hats, Earmuffs, Scarfs, Umbrellas, Medications (inhalers or diabetic items are exceptions), Personal Laptops*, Keys, headphones/earbuds, or work ID badges (Head coverings for religious reasons are allow)
      *For in-center testing
    • Outerwear - Coats and jackets should be stored or hung up outside of testing room.
    • Additional requirements for virtual testing:
      • Testing on a bed is not allowed
      • Car is ok if student is alone
      • No public spaces that have noise or distraction
      • Library is ok if in private room
      • No testing in a bathroom.
    • Glasses - Proctor must visually inspect the glasses of candidate.
    • Jewelry - Solid or chunky jewelry must be visually inspected. Items that may cause noise or distraction must be removed.
    • Pockets - Pockets of candidates must be emptied with all items placed in a locker or storage area.
  • Most Ivy Tech testing centers have lockers or similar areas to lock-up belongings. At some of our smaller Testing Centers these may not be available or may be limited in number. We encourage candidates to bring as few personal items to the Testing Center as possible.

  • Only exam candidates are allowed in the Center including the waiting area and testing room.

    • When you first arrive, you will be greeted by a proctor.
    • You will be asked to show your ID and any other required documentation for your exam.
    • The proctor will walk you through any security checks depending on the exam you are taking.  (This may include, being asked to store your personal belongings.)
    • The proctor will confirm the exam you are taking and will confirm you with any items that are allowed with the exam (scratch paper, pencil, earplugs, etc.).
    • The proctor will provide you with instructions relevant to the exam you are taking. If you have specific questions about the process for your particular exam now is the best time to ask.
    • During the exam if you have questions notify a proctor.
    • After your exam, the proctor will walk you through the appropriate check-out steps relevant to your exam.
