Confined Space Entry

This course provides essential training for employees who may enter, monitor, or supervise work in confined spaces as defined by OSHA's Permit-Required Confined Space standards (29 CFR 1910.146 for General Industry and 29 CFR 1926 Subpart AA for Construction).

A confined space is any area large enough for a worker to enter, with limited entry or exit, and not designed for continuous occupancy. Many workplaces contain confined spaces with serious hazards - including atmospheric dangers, engulfment risks, mechanical hazards, and restricted movement - that can lead to injury or fatality without proper training.

This EMI course teaches participants how to recognize confined spaces, understand permit requirements, evaluate hazards, and follow safe entry procedures. It is appropriate for maintenance staff, industrial workers, environmental and safety teams, supervisors, and anyone responsible for confined space entry operations.

Topics include:

  • Regulatory requirements for confined space entry
  • Differences between permit-required and non-permit spaces
  • Atmospheric testing and monitoring (oxygen levels, toxic gases, flammable atmospheres)
  • Isolation and lockout/tagout requirements
  • Ventilation techniques and hazard elimination
  • Roles and responsibilities of entrants, attendants, and entry supervisors
  • Emergency and rescue considerations

Upon successful completion of the Confined Space Entry course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify confined spaces and distinguish between permit-required and non-permit spaces
  • Recognize atmospheric, physical, and mechanical hazards associated with confined space entry
  • Explain OSHA's confined space regulations and required elements of an entry permit
  • Demonstrate proper atmospheric monitoring and ventilation procedures
  • Describe the roles and responsibilities of entrants, attendants, and entry supervisors
  • Apply safe work practices, including isolation, communication, and continuous monitoring
  • Understand emergency response considerations and limitations of rescue operations

Employee registration is coordinated by the Program Manager supporting your training. Depending on the course, employees may register in person, through an organization-provided roster, or via a self-registration link. Your Program Manager will guide you through the best option for your specific training.
