Excavation Competent Person

This course provides Competent Persons with the skills to identify excavation hazards, classify soils, and select proper protective systems to meet OSHA requirements. Participants will learn how to conduct daily inspections, recognize changing conditions, and implement effective hazard-control strategies to prevent excavation-related injuries.

  • Understand OSHA requirements for excavation and trenching operations.

  • Identify excavation hazards including cave-ins, soil instability, water, utilities, and atmospheric risks.

  • Perform soil classification using OSHA-approved visual and manual tests.

  • Select and evaluate protective systems (sloping, benching, shoring, shielding).

  • Conduct required daily inspections and document findings as the Competent Person.

  • Recognize changing conditions requiring immediate corrective action.

  • Develop hazard-control strategies to prevent excavation-related injuries.

Employee registration is coordinated by the Program Manager supporting your training. Depending on the course, employees may register in person, through an organization-provided roster, or via a self-registration link. Your Program Manager will guide you through the best option for your specific training.
