Academic Advising at Ivy Tech
Academic advising serves to help students set and complete their programs and/or academic goals by building relationships within their student success network. Advising is a collaborative partnership where the student is the primary driver for success and their advisor serves as a navigator to support them through their educational journey.
Your academic advisor will be your guide as you determine which courses to take each semester. If your goal is to transfer to a four-year college or university, your advisor will help you with that too!
Because we want to ensure that all our students have the best possible experience at Ivy Tech, we require all students to meet with an advisor to build an Academic Completion Plan. This plan will be your guide to course selection through the completion of your college degree. Working with your academic advisor to create and possibly update your plan could save you time and money.
New Students:
If you are new to Ivy Tech and this is the first time you’ll be taking college courses, please contact your Enrollment Center.
New students are also encouraged to complete their enrollment steps if you have not already done so.
Current Students:
The best way to accomplish your goals is to meet with your academic advisor. Log into MyIvy by clicking the "Schedule an Appointment" button and follow the instructions in the resource section below.
We encourage you to complete your Advising Checklist prior to your advising appointment.

Whether you're new to college or just need to brush up on your skills, these study tips may help you be successful in your courses.
- Manage your time by scheduling your study time.
- Use a daily, weekly, and monthly scheduler to help keep you on track.
- List when assignments are due and plan backwards from their due dates.
- Create a space that is set aside for your college coursework.
- Have the tools you need on hand to study such as highlighters, computer, paper, calculator, correct lighting, etc.
- Study in short time blocks of no more than one hour at a time.
- Break larger assignments into smaller segments.
- Schedule extra time for the unexpected (the car that breaks down or the printer that jams, etc).
- Take notes in class and during reading and be sure to review them.
- Ask yourself questions and then answer them in your own words.
- Write questions you don't know the answer to in the margins of your notes and ask your instructor.
- Class attendance is important! It is a time to ask questions, review information, and learn material that isn't found in your textbooks.
- Form a study group with others in your class.
SUCCESS TIPS FOR 8-WEEK CLASSES – BE PREPARED
- Communicate as early as possible with your Instructors and your Academic Advisor if life circumstances are getting in the way of your success.
- Pay special attention to assignments that may have specific due dates throughout the week, like a discussion board.
- Organize your materials to fit each of your class requirements.
- Ask questions early about major assignments; do not wait until the last minute.
- Balancing your schedule is very important for success. If you plan to take 5 classes, consider no more than three in an 8-week term.
- Schedule time outside of class to do homework, study for tests, and keep up on required reading.
- Build relationships with both students and the instructor early in the class.
- Quickly engage in the course, get your books and materials early, know your deadlines, and know your course syllabus.
- Get to know your CAMPUS RESOURCES early!
BENEFITS OF TAKING 8-WEEK CLASSES
- Complete courses within 8-weeks and beat the mid-semester burnout.
- You can still earn the same number of credits in a semester.
- With classes starting every 8 weeks, you will be able to focus on fewer subjects at a time.
-
Ivy Tech offers free online tutoring for those who need help with study habits, test taking, time management, and more. Visit the Tutoring webpage for more information and to connect with Campus Tutoring Services.

These pathways benefit students in multiple ways. The pathways have eliminated some math courses giving students very clear choices of math classes, and less chance to have to repeat math when changing majors. College algebra is no longer required for as many majors and has been replaced by statistics and reasoning classes to better match the math skills you will actually use on the job. All of this means that if you struggle in math you may be able to complete your degree requirements and graduate from college in less time.
Tech Pathway
This is a class that features math lessons taught using concepts learned in the technical lab. Only minimal algebra is required for this pathway and is included in MATH 122. Students in this pathway will learn concepts they will need on the job.
Quantitative Reasoning Pathway
Quantitative reasoning will get you thinking about problem-solving with measurement, geometry, finance, central tendency, and probability.
Algebra/Calculus Transfer Pathway
Many of the students in this pathway are in a program of study that prepares them to transfer to a four-year institution to complete a bachelor's degree.

You will need to speak with your academic advisor before changing programs. Changing your course of study may impact your financial aid and time to degree completion. Students who want to change their academic program should speak with their advisor, who will start the online process to change a program.
