What is counseling?

Counseling is a safe relationship of trust, respect and confidence in which a person seeking help learns to explore one's self and his/her own abilities to cope with life experiences more effectively. The fundamental belief in counseling is that individuals have worth, dignity and the ability to solve their own problems when they understand themselves and their choices and the potential outcomes. One may also use counseling for personal growth and development.

What about confidentiality?

Generally all information you share with your counselor is kept confidential and cannot be shared with family members, friends, or employees of the college unless you grant your permission in writing. If there is a concern that an individual who comes to counseling may be a risk or danger to themselves or others, confidentiality can be broken. Also, if the counselor becomes aware of abuse or neglect of a minor or elder, the counselor is required by law to report the abuse. Sometimes, on rare occasions, if the records are subpoenaed by the court, confidentiality may be broken.  All of the above situations happen in only a rare number of cases.

What kind of time commitment does counseling require?

Typically you will meet with a counselor one time a week for an hour. The length of time required to make the desired progress will depend on the issues being addressed and also the effort put in to the solutions, but generally it is found that 3-6 sessions is sufficient.
