What is the difference between “graduation” and “commencement”? 

GRADUATION is when you complete all requirements and your degree or certificate is awarded.

COMMENCEMENT is the ceremony where we celebrate your graduation! 

 

 

ParTICIPATION

  • Students who will complete their degree requirements at the end of the Fall 2025, Spring 2026, or Summer 2026 semesters may participate. There are no fall or summer Commencement ceremonies. 

Apply to Graduate

  • Be sure to apply to graduate to be awarded your credential and receive Commencement Ceremony communications. Go to MyIvy and search Apply to Graduate. 

COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY DETAILS

  • Check Eligibility
    Students close to completing degree or certificate requirements should confirm their progress with their academic advisor to ensure they are eligible to apply to graduate.

    If you are in the final semester of your program, you may be eligible to receive your credential!

    Apply to Graduate
    All students must apply to graduate to receive their degree or certificate. To ensure your name is printed on the commencement program AND to receive important updates about the ceremony, apply as soon as you are registered for your final semester or in-progress toward final degree requirements.

    To apply for graduation, visit MyIvy and search Apply to Graduate.

    • Fall 2025 Graduates – Apply by December 31, 2025
    • Spring 2026 Graduates – Apply by April 6, 2026
    • Summer 2026 Graduates – Apply by April 6, 2026

    Note: Fall 2025 graduates must apply to graduate by December 31 to ensure credentials are awarded in a timely manner. Summer 2026 graduates who intend to participate in the Commencement Ceremony must apply to graduate by April 6, so they are able to obtain commencement regalia (cap and gown) in time. 

    Order Your Cap & Gown
    Students who will participate in commencement must wear Ivy Tech commencement attire. This includes a black robe, a black cap, and tassel (color dependent upon credential earned).You can order your commencement attire here or keep reading for more cap and gown information. 

    Graduates who are unable to purchase Commencement attire may reach out to hamiltoncounty-ivycares@ivytech.edu to request assistance. 

    RSVP to Attend Commencement
    You will submit your intent to attend the Commencement Ceremony when completing the graduation application in MyIvy. Tickets are required to attend and are free! Students who apply to graduate will receive a personalized RSVP link in March, where they will select the number of guest tickets needed (max. 10 guest tickets). RSVPs and ticket requests must be submitted no later than Friday, April 24, 2026. Please contact HamiltonCounty-Registrar@ivytech.edu for more information.

    You must have a cap and gown as well as a tassel in order to participate in the ceremony. Students who do not have a cap and gown will not be permitted to participate, so pay close attention to the ordering deadlines. If you require assistance in acquiring your cap and gown, please fill out this form.

    CAP & GOWN DEADLINES:

    Deadline: Monday, April 6, 2026
    *Your cap and gown will be shipped to your home address within 2 weeks. (Orders placed after this date may incur additional fees.) 

    The cost of the cap, gown, and tassel is $62.00 and the shipping fee is $14.90.

  • Graduation & Transfer Fair 

    Attend the Transfer and Graduation Fair on Wednesday, March 25, 2026! Connect with transfer representatives from colleges and universities across the state to ask questions, explore transfer opportunities, and plan your transfer journey.  

    Celebrate your upcoming graduation with food, drinks, and raffle prizes! Check in with our staff at the fair to receive assistance with ordering commencement attire, applying to graduate, or with any questions related to graduation.  

    • Processional will begin at 6:00 p.m. This includes platform party, faculty, staff, and graduates. 
    • The Ceremony is estimated to last approximately 60-90 minutes. 
  • The commencement program is available electronically. An online QR code will be provided during the ceremony.

    Note: Students must have a completed graduation application on file to be awarded their credentials, receive a Commencement RSVP link, and be listed in the Commencement program. 

    The College recognizes three levels of honors for graduating students, based upon cumulative Grade Point Average: 

    4.00 Summa Cum Laude (denoted in program with (+++) 

    3.75-3.99 Magna Cum Laude (denoted in program with (++) 

    3.50-3.74 Cum Laude (denoted in program with (+) 

    Calculation of academic honors, if listed for publication in the graduation ceremony program, will be as of the semester prior to graduation (for spring and summer graduates only). Honors recorded on the transcript will include the graduation term in the calculation.

  • Are you ready to celebrate your Graduate? Tickets are required to attend. Graduates may request up to 10 tickets when they RSVP to the Commencement Ceremony. Please contact your Graduate for more information about receiving your ticket. 

    Accessible parking, ADA seating, elevators, escalators, and a sensory room, are available at the Arena for guests with accessibility needs. ASL interpretation and live-captioning services will be provided during the ceremony. 

  • Photography will be conducted by The Grad Team and available for purchase approximately one week after the ceremony. If you would like to purchase photos after the ceremony, please visit The Grad Team website here.

Common Questions

No. Graduates will pick up their cords and graduate line- up cards when they arrive at The Arena for check-in on Commencement day. Graduates will line up by school and program, and we will have staff available to guide them. 

Yes – RSVPing is required for graduates to attend the ceremony. This helps our team have your graduation name card ready.  

If you miss the deadline, no worries; you can still attend! Please contact our office to let us know you still plan on attending so we can prepare your graduation name card upon arrival. 

Yes. Eligible students can apply to graduate until the end of the term. The application deadline is specific to the Commencement Ceremony and ensures we have your name in the Commencement Program. 

Yes. Graduates will be standing from the moment they check in until they process into the Arena. Graduates will walk up and down stairs when receiving their diploma covers. A ramp will also be available for accessing the stage. 

The Arena at Innovation Mile offers services and amenities for guests with accessibility needs, including accessible parking, restrooms, elevators, escalators, a sensory room, and ADA seating. If you have accessibility questions, please contact the Arena at noblesville@reventertainment.com.

Students must wear black caps and gowns with comfortable shoes and business casual attire.Plan to give your personal belongings to your guests, as there is no place to store them during the ceremony. 

Yes! Note that decorations must be appropriate (no obscene language, writing, or imagery). Ensure that the tassel can still be moved from one side to the other. 

Don't panic. You can still participate in graduation by borrowing a plain black cap and gown from someone you know or buying them at a different store. 

Commencement is a ticketed event and each graduate may request a maximum of 10 guest tickets. Graduates will receive the RSVP link in their emails in March. Graduates with young children should plan on having their children sit with friends and family. If you need to update the number of guests you will bring, email our team to let us know.  

No, graduates will receive the Ivy Tech Community College diploma cover when they cross the stage. Diplomas will be mailed out to the home address on file after they  credential has been conferred. Degree conferral takes between 4-6 weeks after the term has ended. Students are encouraged to check their unofficial transcript to ensure the degree has been awarded. 

Students who need to provide proof of graduation for an employer may email HamiltonCounty-Registrar@ivytech.edu to request an official letter. Please allow 1-3 business days for us to process your request.

Yes! Students who belong to honor societies may wear their regalia for the ceremony.
