Important Commencement Update for Spring/Summer/Fall 2020 Ceremony

Congratulations graduates! We know you all have been wondering how the Spring/Summer 2020 commencement ceremony would be impacted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ivy Tech Central Indiana is excited to inform you that the ceremony will not be canceled, and will be held on November 6, 2020. This will be a combined ceremony with fall 2020 graduates. We will continue to share updates and more information as it comes in on this page and via email. More details, including time and location, will be available in August. 

(This is a revised date - originally we planned on December, but things have since changed). 

All graduates will have to RSVP to attend the ceremony including the Spring and Summer graduates will need to re-RSVP in the fall.  Spring & Summer grads will not have to re-apply to graduate.

Friday, May 1 would have been the day we celebrated our more than 1,200 Ivy Tech graduates at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum for commencement.  


While we were unable to celebrate together in person, we celebrated you in spirit. It was the semester we never expected, and each of you persevered against all odds. 

We are so proud of you, class of 2020 and we look forward to celebrating you in person this November.

Please note - the dates on this checklist will change due to the revision of the ceremony date, but you can use it as reference to know which steps to take. An updated checklist will be updated in the future once new dates are established for the ceremony. 

What's the difference between graduation and commencement? 

  • Graduation is when a student completes all requirements of their degree and is awarded a credential. 
  • Commencement is the ceremony that celebrates graduation.

Commencement Delay Q&A

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all Ivy Tech commencement ceremonies have been delayed.

The Ivy Tech Central Indiana Spring/Summer ceremony will be held with the Fall 2020 ceremony on November 6. 

We know you will have many questions! Below is a Q&A of frequently asked questions. Don't hesitate to reach out to us for anything you don't see and would like to ask. 

Can caps & gowns still be purchased?

Yes! If you have not purchased a cap and gown you may at your local Barnes & Noble Bookstore when they re-open.

Can caps & gowns be returned?

Yes! You may return caps & gowns at your local Barnes & Noble Bookstore once they re-open. A full refund will be provided for those that are still in the package. A partial refund may be available if the item is still in good condition yet no longer in the original package.

Cap and Gown

The Ivy Tech Bookstore is scheduled to re-open on August 6. You may be contacted on/after that date regarding your cap and gown. 

Your cap and gown must be ordered by the date specifed above. To order your cap and gown, visit the Herff Jones website. If you have any questions regarding your order, contact the Downtown Indianapolis or Lawrence locations. For hours, visit IvyTech.edu/bookstore. Plan to decorate your cap? please review the Ivy Tech Central Indiana cap decoration rules 


Diplomas will be mailed to students after commencement, following completion of program requirements. If you have any questions regarding your program completion, it is highly recommended that you contact your Program Chair to assure requirements have been met during your final term of enrollment.

Instructions for Guests and Graduates

Information includes instructions for the day of the event, the commencement schedule and important information for guests and parking. It is critical all graduates review this information as you prepare for commencement day. Instructions are posted the week prior to the ceremony. 


Lifetouch is honored to be a part of your graduation ceremony and will be photographing every student as he/she is individually recognized. You will be notified by email directly via Lifetouch to direct you to your specific images within two weeks of the commencement ceremony. Commencement Program and Names

Your name will appear in the following order: First name, middle name or initial, and last name. Your name must conform to the official name on record. If you want your name officially changed in our records, you must do so at the Office of the Registrar.

Please share your photos on social media by using #IvyTechGrad and tag us on Instagram using @IvyTechIndy. 


All students that plan to attend the commencement ceremony MUST submit an RSVP. The commencement RSVP will notify Ivy Tech staff to ensure a student's name is in the program and called out in the ceremony. 

The RSVP for the November ceremony will be available in the fall 2020 semester. Check back.
