Boiler & Pressure Vessel Inspector (NBBI)

Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana, in cooperation with the State of Indiana's Boiler and Pressure Vessel Division, offers a special training course for persons interested in acquiring eligibility for securing certification from the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors as an authorized inspector, owner-user inspector or jurisdictional competency recognition. The course aims to understand and design ASME code standards, inspection concepts, and preparation for the National Board Examination.

  1. Understand Code Requirements and Jurisdiction. Interpret and apply the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) Sections I, IV, and VIII; Understand National Board Inspection Code (NBIC) Parts 1 (Installation), 2 (Inspection), and 3 (Repairs and Alterations); Apply jurisdictional rules and regulations governing boiler and pressure vessel installations and inspections.

  2. Perform Effective Inspections. Identify required construction features and ensure compliance with applicable codes; Conduct internal and external inspections of boilers and pressure vessels; Assess equipment condition, detect corrosion, cracking, distortion, or other damage.

  3. Ensure Documentation and Certification Compliance. Review and verify Manufacturer's Data Reports and other documentation for code compliance; Understand stamping, nameplate requirements, and certification procedures.

  4. Apply Welding and NDE Knowledge. Understand basic welding processes used in pressure equipment fabrication and repair; Interpret nondestructive examination (NDE) methods (e.g., RT, UT, MT, PT) and their application in inspection.

  5. Evaluate Repairs and Alterations. Inspect and evaluate repairs and alterations for code compliance; Understand post-repair documentation and reinspection requirements.

  6. Demonstrate Safety and Professionalism. Apply proper safety procedures during inspections and site visits; Communicate findings professionally in written reports and verbal consultations.


This training prepares participants for eligibility to sit for the National Board Commission examination, a key credential required for becoming a commissioned Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspector.

Employee registration is coordinated by the Program Manager supporting your training. Depending on the course, employees may register in person, through an organization-provided roster, or via a self-registration link.
