HAZWOPER Clean-up 24 Hour Site Worker (Initial)

This course is organized under the supervision of the Ivy Tech Environmental Management Institute at the Indianapolis Campus.

This course complies with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120 for “occasional” site workers and is designed to be taught in 24 hours. Included in the 24 hours are daily material presentations, material reviews, labs, exercises and activities, and pre- and post- tests. Participants who complete this 24-hour course may later complete the remaining 16 hours needed for the full 40-hour Hazardous Waste Worker Course.

As a result of this course, participants will demonstrate knowledge of:

  • Basics of hazardous materials and their classifications
  • Processes for handling known and unknown hazardous substances
  • Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) for hazardous waste site cleanup
  • Site control principles and the establishment of work zones
  • Decontamination procedures for personnel and equipment
  • Participants will gain hands-on practice with:
  • Monitoring equipment used to detect and measure chemical hazards
  • Selection, use, and limitations of PPE, including SCBA equipment
  • Safe drum handling techniques
  • Full decontamination procedures

Employee registration is coordinated by the Program Manager supporting your training. Depending on the course, employees may register in person, through an organization-provided roster, or via a self-registration link. Your Program Manager will guide you through the best option for your specific training.
