Managing Asbestos in Buildings

EMI classes are only available through the Indianapolis Ivy Tech campus at this time. For more information, contact Indianapolis-EMI@ivytech.edu.

Asbestos remains present in many commercial, residential, and institutional buildings and it has not been banned in the United States. Building owners, facility managers, and school administrators must understand where asbestos may be found, how to manage it safely, and what federal regulations require of them. Both OSHA and EPA/AHERA impose specific obligations for identifying asbestos-containing materials (ACM), notifying employees and contractors, and maintaining proper documentation and management plans.

Delivered under the supervision of the Ivy Tech Environmental Management Institute (Indianapolis), this 8-hour course fulfills all AHERA training requirements for Local Education Agency (LEA) Designated Persons (40 CFR 763.84(g)) and provides practical guidance for anyone responsible for building operations or occupant safety.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Identify materials that must be presumed or treated as asbestos
  • Safely manage asbestos in place
  • Communicate hazards to employees, tenants, and contractors
  • Support cost-effective and compliant building operations

This course is ideal for building managers, maintenance supervisors, school administrators, safety officers, and anyone who oversees facility operations.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify common locations of asbestos-containing materials (ACM) and presumed asbestos-containing materials (PACM) within buildings.
  • Explain the health effects and risks associated with asbestos exposure and the importance of proper management.
  • Interpret and apply OSHA Asbestos Construction Standard requirements (29 CFR 1926.1101), including hazard communication and notification responsibilities.
  • Understand and fulfill EPA AHERA requirements for K-12 schools, including the role and responsibilities of the LEA Designated Person.
  • Develop or support compliant asbestos management strategies, including surveillance, recordkeeping, maintenance protocols, and response actions.
  • Communicate asbestos hazards effectively to employees, tenants, contractors, and building occupants.
  • Recognize when licensed asbestos professionals are required for inspection, management planning, or abatement activities.
  • Promote safe, cost-effective building operations through proactive asbestos awareness and regulatory compliance.
