Early Mathematics Skilled Micro-Credential

This course equips aspiring educators with a foundation of skills and confidence to excel in working with young children in group settings. In the modules, students will define early math concepts in children's birth-five and how to prepare a learning environment that promotes progressional growth of math skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate experiences and interactions. (Application of course content may be completed via video-based observation experiences, with an individual child, or within a classroom placement, if employed at the site).

Describe emergent math concepts and basic developmental progressions of mathematical thinking from birth–5, including attributes, comparison, patterns, change, number sense, counting, one to one correspondence, operations, measurement, classifying, spatial relationships, and shapes.

Describe mathematical dispositions (curiosity, problem-solving, persistence, risk-taking) that support children's mathematical thinking.

Analyze learning environments that promote mathematical thinking through play and exploration

Explain how materials, routines, relationships, language, and interactions support emergent math development of birth-5.

Describe play-based math experiences that authentically embed number sense, counting, operations, patterns, measurement, classifying, spatial relationships, and shapes into children's everyday lives.

Observe and document children's mathematical behaviors using developmentally appropriate and ethical assessment practices and determine how to use the information and data gathered to guide instruction

Communicate in practical, culturally responsive ways families can support early mathematical concepts in everyday routines.
