COMPEXL30: Microsoft Excel - Level 1

This introductory course is designed for learners who are new to Microsoft Excel and want to build a strong foundation in spreadsheet basics. Participants will learn how to navigate the Excel interface, enter and format data, create simple formulas and functions, and organize information using rows, columns, and worksheets. The course also covers essential skills such as sorting and filtering data, basic chart creation, and printing spreadsheets. Ideal for professionals in any field, this class provides the core skills needed to confidently use Excel for everyday tasks regardless of version. In a Microsoft Excel Level 1 class, you will learn foundational skills that enable you to confidently create, manage, and format spreadsheets:

Core Skills

  • Understand the Excel interface (ribbons, cells, worksheets, and workbooks)
  • Navigate and select cells, rows, columns, and ranges
  • Enter, edit, and format text, numbers, and dates

Formulas & Functions

  • Create basic formulas using arithmetic operators (e.g., =A1+B1)
  • Use common functions such as:

    • SUM
    • AVERAGE
    • MIN/MAX
    • COUNT
  • Understand relative vs. absolute cell references

Formatting and Layout

  • Apply cell formatting: fonts, colors, borders, and number formats
  • Use AutoFill, Format Painter, and conditional formatting
  • Adjust column widths and row heights
  • Merge and center cells

Organizing Data

  • Sort and filter lists of data
  • Insert and delete rows, columns, and worksheets
  • Rename, move, and copy worksheets

Charts & Visualization

  • Create basic charts (bar, column, line, pie)
  • Understand chart elements and simple customization

Preparing for Print

  • Set print areas and page layout options
  • Use print preview, adjust margins, and insert headers/footers

These skills provide a solid starting point for students to use Excel confidently in office, academic, or personal settings.

Employee registration is coordinated by the Program Manager supporting your training. Depending on the course, employees may register in person, through an organization-provided roster, or via a self-registration link.
