As part of a strategic shift in services, IvyCares at Ivy Tech Indianapolis will conclude its Technology Loaner Program following the Summer 2026 term. Loaner laptops and hotspots will remain available through August 2026, after which students will no longer be able to borrow technology through the program.
Faculty and staff play an important role in helping students prepare for this transition. Going forward, IvyCares encourages employees to reinforce that a personal laptop is an essential tool for college success, much like textbooks and other required course materials.
Many retailers offer student-friendly laptops starting at approximately $300, with financing and payment plans available to make purchasing a device more affordable.
For students who may need additional financial assistance, several nonprofit and community organizations offer technology resources:
-
PCs for People provides low-cost computers to individuals who meet income eligibility requirements or participate in qualifying assistance programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, or SSI. Students can apply online by creating an account and submitting proof of eligibility. This is the most readily available resource for students in need of a laptop.
-
Computers with Causes accepts applications from individuals experiencing financial hardship. While availability is limited and wait times may vary, eligible students can apply by completing and mailing an application.
-
Dell Scholars Program offers technology support as part of its national scholarship program for qualifying high school seniors. While this resource is not available to current college students, it may be helpful for prospective students preparing to enroll.
-
TAG Mobile's Lifeline Program provides qualifying low-income individuals with free mobile phone service through a federally supported program. While it does not provide laptops, it may help students reduce other technology-related expenses.
Faculty and staff should also encourage students to review the College's Laptop Specifications Guide, which outlines recommended specifications for each academic program and helps them select a device that meets their coursework needs.
By helping students plan ahead and connecting them with available resources, faculty and staff can support a smooth transition as the Technology Loaner Program concludes.
