When Zaina Lorick transferred to Ivy Tech Indianapolis from what was formerly known as Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis’ (IUPUI) biology program, she wasn’t sure exactly how to align her studies with her long-term career goals. That changed after a conversation with her Ivy Tech advisor, who suggested biotechnology as the perfect fit for her interests—particularly working in a lab setting.

Lorick first heard about the Lilly Scholars at Ivy Tech program in class when her professors mentioned the opportunity. She quickly looked it up, applied in just 15 minutes, and was thrilled to learn she had been accepted.

“The scholarship has helped me throughout my education journey by helping with financial stability,” Lorick said. “I was working 40 hours a week full-time and also juggling about 12 credit hours. So, financially, I was supporting myself throughout the whole thing … And Lilly Scholar helped me.”

With plans to work in a lab setting at Lilly, Lorick hopes to contribute to life-changing advancements, from developing medications to, one day, finding a cure for diseases.
