Practical Nursing

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is an integral part of the health care team. The Practical Nursing program leads to a Technical Certificate and can be completed in approximately one year. The accredited program will prepare you to care for patients in a variety of health care settings, such as hospitals, convalescent centers, clinics, home care and physician offices. Graduates are eligible to apply to the state licensure exam (NCLEX-PN) to become a Licensed Practical Nurse.

The Practical Nursing program is a selective program.. The nursing program accepts a limited number of students each year and there is a separate application process. Contact your campus of interest below for more details.

Check out the Ivy Tech Guided Pathway to Success (Ivy Tech GPS) icons to map out your pathway for success.

WHY CHOOSE THE PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM?
Nursing is a career that is in great demand and will be for the foreseeable future. The aging population of the "Baby Boomers", the aging nursing workforce, and the inability of nursing school to educate sufficient numbers of students to fill the vacancies all create a need for more nurses. It is estimated that there are approximately 100,000 nursing openings currently in the United States.

The top reasons to become a nurse include:

  • Rewarding job: making a difference in people's lives every day
  • Flexible hours: Shifts include days, evenings, nights; 8-hour and 12-hour shifts
  • Great pay: average starting salaries start around $25.00 per hour
  • Job security: nurses are in great demand
  • Diversity of work settings: acute care, long-term care, rehabilitation, public health, schools, clinics, military to name a few
  • Nursing can take you anywhere around the country and even around the world
  • Nursing is hard work, but it is very rewarding. Making a difference in someone's life is priceless.
