Office Administration

The Office Administration program prepares the student for a career in a professional office environment. As the business office relies increasingly on technology, organizations need well-trained, capable individuals to ensure that daily tasks are handled efficiently and effectively. In Ivy Tech's Office Administration program, students will learn the technical and interpersonal skills that will make them key players in day-to-day operations. Students will study the current Microsoft Office applications including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, desktop publishing, and other communications technologies, allowing them to develop skills that will move them to the top of an organization's must-hire list. Students will also take the Microsoft certification exams in Word, Excel, and Access; as an option, students may also test in Outlook and PowerPoint.

Through the choices of electives, students may choose to study:

Administrative: Administrative assistants, managers and staff work in an automated office environment addressing current skills in word processing and office procedures.

Legal: Legal office administrators perform and coordinate a law office's administrative activities and disseminate information to staff and clients.

Medical: The medical office of today requires specific job skills focusing on providing effective customer service to patients, insurance providers, and other physician practices. Medical office administrators are responsible for a variety of administrative and clerical duties necessary to operate a medical office efficiently and effectively.

Software Applications: Students studying software applications will develop competencies with word processing, spreadsheets, and databases that will equip them with skills appropriate for most offices.
