Human Services

If you're looking for a career that will allow you to help others, you may want to check out our Human Services program. It's designed to provide meaningful training for students interested in working with people. The program emphasizes the personal attitudes, technical knowledge, and practical skills necessary to obtain entry-level employment in a wide variety of social service settings. As human services paraprofessionals, graduates reach out to individuals, families and communities.

HUMAN SERVICES CERTIFICATES
Certificates are sequences of technical and professional courses. They provide access to targeted, short-term workforce training, and completers may sit for specific certification exams. Courses in certificate programs also apply toward technical certificates and associate degree programs in the subject area.

Certificates currently offered in this field are:

  • Direct Support Professional (17 credits)
    Upon completion leads to various levels of certification as a Disability Support Professional, employment, and/or completion of an associate degree. Successful completion of the Foundations of Direct Support Professionals course leads to certification as a Disability Support Specialist and qualifies a person to be employed in a state disability agency.   • Elder Care Professional (21 credits)
    Upon completion leads to certification as an Indiana Health Care Associate Activity's Director and Social Services designee, employment, and/or completion of an associate degree. Program and Employment Information
  • Substance Abuse (16 credits)
    Upon completio leads to NADAC Counselor in Training certification, employment, and/or completion of an associate degree. Program and Employment Information

HUMAN SERVICES TECHNICAL CERTIFICATE
Technical Certificate programs provide education in conceptual and technical skills for specific occupations. Each program contains a sequence of required courses in a recognized concentration within one of the programs at the College. The program content is designed to develop competency in the comprehension of general and technical skills. Certificate programs require mastery of basic reading, writing, mathematical and algebraic skills. Program and Employment Information

To earn this degree, you must have 31-33 credits in the following areas:

  • General Education Core: 7-9 credits
  • Professional/Technical Core: 3 credits
  • Concentration Courses: 6-21 credits
  • Regionally Determined Courses: 0-15 credits

  • Direct Support Professional (21 credits)
  • Indiana Youth Development Professional (21 credits)

ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE

Students are encouraged to review their options with their advisors, to consult the current catalog of the institution to which they wish to transfer, and to contact the institution to which they wish to transfer. ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE
To earn this degree, you must have 62-65 credits in the following areas:

  • General Education Core: 19-21 credits
  • Professional/Technical Core: 26 credits
  • Statewide Electives or Concentration Courses: 17-18 credits

Human Services AAS Concentrations:

  • Direct Support Professional (17-18 credits)
    This concentration prepares you for a career at agencies that provide community-based services and support to individuals with developmental disabilities in a variety of settings including vocational, residential, and recreational.
  • Indiana Youth Development Professional (18 credits)
  • Substance Abuse (18 credits)
    With a concentration in substance abuse, you may find a job in substance abuse centers (residential, detox, hospitals) as counselors or counselors-in-training

ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE VIA IV TECH ONLINE
To earn this degree, you must have 63-65 credits in the following areas:

  • General Education Core: 19-21 credits
  • Professional/Technical Core: 44 credits
