If you're a high school student, consider taking college classes while you are still in high school. Dual Credit is an option for high school students to simultaneously take college classes while in high school, to receive college credit, and to fulfill high school requirements.
Some courses are taught at the high schools during school hours, while others are taught at the Ivy Tech sites during the day, evening, or weekends. Dual Credit allows students to get ahead and earn college credit before finishing high school.

K-12 Initiatives 2011-2012 Programs
Traditional Dual Credit - Contact Esther Harrington at 916-7983, eharrington5@ivytech.edu or Heather Morrison 921-4907, hmorriso@ivytech.edu
- Ivy Tech Community College offers Dual Credit agreements to schools with appropriately credentialed high school /career center instructors whose courses align with courses on the Dual Credit Crosswalk.
- Course content must be equivalent to the Ivy Tech course by incorporating the identical syllabi, comparable textbooks, class assignments, and examinations. All performance expectations required of the Ivy Tech Community College course shall be met.
- Students taking Dual Credit classes must meet the same academic readiness standards as students taking the course on an Ivy Tech campus. Proof of academic readiness can be demonstrated through qualifying PSAT, SAT, or ACT scores, or appropriate placement on the COMPASS assessment.
- There is no tuition charge to students or to the school for Dual Credit classes. Ivy Tech covers the cost.
- High school Dual Credit faculty have the opportunity to participate in on-going professional development.
Summer College Academy
- Ivy Tech Community College offers students who have successfully completed Dual Credit the opportunity to participate in a Summer College Academy on the Ivy Tech Central Indiana Campus to encourage continued college attendance. During the summer semester, the College will offer three credits of tuition from a list of transferable general education classes or a selection of approved program specific courses free of charge for the first 100 selected recipients.
- The Summer College Academy is open to high school students who have successfully completed Dual Credit classes at their respective high school.
- Students are financially responsible for purchasing required textbooks and materials for the Summer College Academy with limited scholarships available.
Professor on Loan – Contact Cyndi Stout 921-4261, cstout@ivytech.edu
- Ivy Tech Community College can provide a "Professor on Loan" to high schools to enhance dual credit enrollment opportunities. Through the Professor on Loan program, a credentialed Ivy Tech faculty member comes directly to the high school to provide instruction. High school and college credit can be awarded.
- Scheduling of class meeting time is flexible although the total number of class hours is set. The class follows a normal college semester meeting schedule of 16 weeks with high school breaks taken into consideration.
- Students must demonstrate academic readiness for each course as in the traditional Dual Credit program. Proof of academic readiness is demonstrated through qualifying PSAT, SAT, or ACT scores, or appropriate placement on the COMPASS assessment.
- A flat rate of $2400 for a 3 credit hour course is charged to the school/school district to cover the cost of instruction. Students are not charged tuition by the college to attend the classes however Ivy Tech textbooks and materials must be purchased. Availability of courses is limited by professor availability.
Special Admission/Early Admission – Contact Cyndi Stout 921-4261, cstout@ivytech.edu
- Eligible high school students can experience the demands of completing college level coursework in an actual college setting on the Ivy Tech Community College campus with other college students.
- Ivy Tech based tuition and fees apply and may be paid by the individual, high school, or other means.
- Ivy Tech K-12 staff work with high school staff/career center personnel/ homeschool administrators or parents to identify students who are eligible to participate.
- Students may enroll in courses for which they meet admission requirements and demonstrate academic readiness. Proof of academic readiness is shown through appropriate PSAT, SAT, or ACT scores, or appropriate placement on the COMPASS assessment. Courses may be taken on campus or online.
- Students must complete the Special Admission Request Form to allow information to be shared with schools and parents.
- Upon approval of the high school, credit earned can apply to high school graduation requirements.
- Scheduling of coursework can occur during the regular school day as approved by the high school or outside of regular school hours.
- The Early Admission program will provide additional case management (advising) to enrolled students to help ensure their success. This program is a contractual agreement between the high school/career center and Ivy Tech Community College. Additional fees may apply.
College Readiness Center - Contact Gary Pellico 968-1509, gpellico@ivytech.edu
- The College Readiness Center is designed to assist and support high school students to become academically ready for college and prepared for college life. The center is jointly sponsored by a local high school and Ivy Tech Community College.
- This self-paced academic program is available at no cost to 11th and 12th grade students who score within 10 points of college readiness in two or more areas on the COMPASS assessment.
The College Readiness Center includes teacher-guided, online learning with a focus on math, reading and writing. The goal of the program is to prepare students for admission to Ivy Tech without the condition of having to enroll in remediation courses as a requirement for college entrance.
College Placement Test
- High schools or career centers may request COMPASS testing of students for the purpose of placement into programs offered through the K-12 division of Ivy Tech Community College. These programs include Dual Credit, Special Admission, Professor on Loan, and the College Readiness Center.
- The Ivy Tech COMPASS assessment is the standard test the college administers to give an indication of a student's ability to perform at the college level.
