What You’ll Learn

This course is designed to be an initial offering for individuals with little or no experience in the HVAC industry. The class is divided evenly between classroom instruction and hands-on lab experience. The classroom instruction focuses on basic electricity and troubleshooting for air conditioners, heat pumps, and furnaces. Other topics included in the course are the concepts of refrigeration, refrigerant recovery, how to charge a system properly, and other information necessary for the federally required EPA 608 certification. Also, essential print reading and customer service. Instruction is also provided for essential maintenance with HVAC equipment and soldering copper pipe and fittings. An equal amount of time is provided in the HVAC lab for applying the classroom concepts to actual equipment.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student can:

  1. Have a basic understanding of electrical concepts.
  2. Have a basic understanding of refrigeration concepts.
  3. Have a basic understanding of heating fundamentals.
  4. Troubleshoot and repair HVAC equipment.
  5. Understand refrigerant recovery and disposal methods.
  6. Perform the proper charge of a refrigerant system.
  7. Solder copper pipe and fittings.
  8. Be able to understand reading a blueprint
  9. Complete customer service training
