BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Ivy Tech Community College’s Bloomington campus is offering a new degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science. The new Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree is career-focused and stackable, allowing students to earn three technical certificates on their way to earning the degree: Certified Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor, and Inclusive Fitness Trainer. The new program brings 13 new courses including strength training, nutrition, sport psychology, fitness facility management and more.

An information session about the new program will be held on Thursday, July 21, from 5:00 to 6:00p.m. in room D204 at Ivy Tech Community College Bloomington, 200 Daniels Way.

The new AAS degree is an addition to the Kinesiology and Exercise Science department, which also offers an Associate of Science (AS) degree. While both degrees are career-focused, the AS is designed for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university and earn a bachelor’s degree before entering the workforce. The new AAS is a stackable program, and students who earn the certificates are eligible for employment while they are still in school, and immediately after they graduate. Both programs are tailored to prepare students for certifications from the American College of Sports Medicine. In addition, they prepare students for professional certifications from all major national certifying organizations, including NASM, NSCA, ACE, and others.

“The job market is competitive, but graduates of the new AAS program will have an immediate leg up on other personal trainers by pursuing these specialized certificates,” said John Branigin, Kinesiology and Exercise Science department chair. “The certificates show students have learned a wide range of skills for a wide range of workplaces.”
