If you currently attend another college or university but are interested in taking a class at Ivy Tech and transferring the credit back to your home college, you’ll be a “guest student” at Ivy Tech.
As a guest student, you can sign up for a course on any subject within any academic program if you meet the prerequisite requirement. You can choose classes that meet in-person or virtually (meet via live video) at your local Ivy Tech or through our online format, where you work more independently, with no scheduled class meeting times. Learn more about class formats here. Also, keep in mind that Ivy Tech does not offer financial aid to guest students.
It’s important to work with your home college advisor to be sure the class you want to take will transfer. Once that is confirmed, see the steps below on how to apply.
There are lots of reasons why you might want to take a course at Ivy Tech as a guest student:
Guest students can take courses on any subject within any academic program that doesn’t have selective admission. We offer 1,400+ classes in more than 70 academic programs! Many guest students take general education courses (like those associated with the Indiana College Core) at Ivy Tech (at lower tuition) and then transfer the credits to their home college to apply toward their bachelor’s degree. Others need a class that isn’t currently offered at their home college and take a summer class to prepare for the fall semester.

Whatever your need is, chances are we’ve got you covered (and for lower tuition than your home college!).
Before enrolling in courses at Ivy Tech, it is important to find out which course credits may transfer to or from other institutions. Use this helpful tool to find out how courses you have taken or plan to take may transfer to another college or university for credit.
The Core Transfer Library is a list of 88 courses that are pre-approved for transfer between all Indiana public college and university campuses, in addition to six independent colleges and universities (assuming adequate grades were earned). Core Transfer Library courses will meet the general or free elective requirements of undergraduate degree programs and most will also count towards degree program requirements, if an equivalent course is taught at the four-year campus you plan to attend.
Ivy Tech does offer courses that may transfer to a select set or even a single college or university. See your academic advisor to learn more about these courses.
Ivy Tech does not offer financial aid to guest students.
Be sure to speak with your advisor at your home institution to make sure you are taking a course that will transfer. Ivy Tech cannot guarantee the transferability of courses to your home institution.
