Ivy Tech will be sunsetting the current Pre-Nursing Studies Certificate in Fall 2024. All students currently enrolled in the Pre-Nursing CT who wish to continue working toward application to the Nursing program are encouraged to move into the Healthcare Specialist Technical Certificate. Below are a list of common questions and answers.

  • This change will be implemented for the 2024 Fall Semester, which begins August 19.

  • Your best option is the TC in Healthcare Specialist - Nursing Interest. This program is designed to effectively prepare you to apply for the Nursing program.

  • You can schedule an appointment with your advisor to make the change.

  • Before fall classes start August 19, 2024.

  • Any nursing pre-requisite course that you took as part of the Pre-Nursing CT will still count in the TC in Healthcare Specialist - Nursing Interest.

  • Yes. You can still complete the CNA coursework in the TC in Healthcare Specialist - Nursing Interest. Completing the coursework and earning your CNA credential will give you 5 points on your nursing application.

  • The TC in Healthcare Specialist - Nursing Interest is 30 credits and typically takes two to three semesters, which equates to one to two years. However, you may be eligible to apply to the Nursing program once you have completed all nursing prerequisites. If you are accepted into the Nursing program, you do not need to complete the TC in Healthcare Specialist - Nursing Interest, so individual timelines may vary.

  • Students are eligible to apply to the nursing program of their choice when the pre-requisite requirements are met. Please refer to the application process for a full list.

    PN Program Admission

    Total Points Possible: 105

    • No General Education Course Prerequisites
    • Students must demonstrate program readiness prior to entry by meeting the prerequisite requirements for ENGL 111, PSYC 101, APHY 101
      • Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in: ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing and ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing 
      • Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing and ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College, and MATH 023 - Essentials of Algebra or MATH 080 - Mathematical Principles or higher 
      • Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing and ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing, or ENGL 075 - Co-Requisite Integrated Reading & Writing
    • ATI TEAS points: Total TEAS score will be used for points selection (100 points possible)
    • CNA or MA Certification points: Optional points added for CNA, CMA, or CCMA certification (5 points possible – with approved documentation) for applicants to traditional ASN and PN programs. 
      • For CNA - Accepting verifications for active certifications in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois, and Michigan only.

    ASN Program Admission

    Total Points Possible: 195

    • General Education Course Points: Points awarded based on pre-requisite course grade (90 points possible)
      • Courses required for admission include APHY 101, APHY 102, ENGL11, PSYC 101
    • ATI TEAS points: Total TEAS score will be used for points selection (100 points possible)
    • CNA or MA Certification points: Optional points added for CNA, CMA, or CCMA certification (5 points possible – with approved documentation) for applicants to traditional ASN and PN programs.
      • For CNA - Accepting verifications for active certifications in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois, and Michigan only.
  • Yes. Students in the Healthcare Specialist program are able to study a wide variety of certification options including Dementia Care, Phlebotomy, Pharmacy Technician, Certified Nursing Aide, and more. Some of these short-term certifications are eligible for Next Level Jobs, which means tuition can be free. Meet with your local Career Coach to explore your career options.
