Advanced Manufacturing Principles Level 1

Advanced Manufacturing Principles Level 1 is a foundational course that introduces students to core manufacturing concepts and practices essential for entry- to mid-level manufacturing careers. Students explore manufacturing's economic importance, Industry 4.0 technologies, lean principles and waste reduction, basic technical competencies, safety standards, and workplace professionalism. Through a combination of lectures, discussions, guided activities, and practical exercises, students develop awareness-level knowledge and skills that prepare them for OSHA 10 General Industry certification and provide an introduction to the MSSC (Manufacturing Skill Standards Council) content knowledge.

  1. Explain manufacturing's economic role in the U.S. and Indiana economies, and identify key Industry 4.0 concepts and technologies used in smart factories.

  2. Apply lean principles and the eight wastes framework to identify value-added versus non-value-added work in manufacturing processes and recommend waste reduction strategies.

  3. Identify common manufacturing tools and equipment, and describe safe and appropriate use for each, including hazard recognition and proper safety procedures.

  4. Interpret basic technical drawings and blueprints, and apply measurement and tolerance concepts to manufacturing scenarios.

  5. Apply OSHA General Industry safety concepts to identify hazards and safe practices in manufacturing workplace scenarios.

  6. Demonstrate professional workplace communication and conduct through written exercises, role-play activities, and discussions aligned with manufacturing workplace expectations.
