Building and Property Maintenance: Essential Skills

This course is designed to equip participants with essential skills for success in Building and Property Maintenance, integrating technical competencies with critical soft skills that enhance employability. Students will develop professional capabilities in effective communication, interpersonal relationships, conflict resolution, critical thinking, collaboration, and career readiness.

Alongside foundational skills, the course offers hands-on training in:

  • carpentry essentials, including framing, hanging doors and windows, and constructing partitions
  • installing and performing preventative maintenance on insulation, siding, and roofing,
  • trim installation, drywall techniques, and painting fundamentals
  • safety considerations, ADA compliance, on-site preventative maintenance
  • diagnosis of basic appliance and HVAC issues

Topical areas of study include: • Carpentry basics • Framing wood and steel partitions • Tools commonly used in the plumbing trade • Paints and painting basics • Hanging, repairing, and finishing drywall • Paint application tools and methods • Installation of pre-hung doors and windows • Plumbing safety • Record-keeping requirements • Requirements for chemical storage/usage • Preventive maintenance plans • Appliance repair • Water softeners • Maintenance scheduling and budgeting • Basic ADA requirements • Safety and liability issues • Water analysis and testing (e.g., swimming pools) • Smart building automation • Drainage, soil erosion, and plant health identification
