Certified Lead Risk Assessors must complete periodic refresher training to continue performing lead-based paint inspections and risk assessments in target housing and child-occupied facilities. The Ivy Tech Environmental Management Institute (EMI) offers an EPA-approved refresher that updates participants on regulatory changes, advanced assessment techniques, and evolving best practices.
This course reviews:
- Changes and updates in federal, state, and local lead regulations
- Current best practices for conducting lead inspections, sampling, and hazard evaluations
- Foundational concepts from the initial accreditation course
- Real-world challenges and solutions discussed with experienced lead professionals
Important note:
Lead Risk Assessors are not required to take both the Inspector and Risk Assessor refreshers. Taking only the Risk Assessor refresher still qualifies an individual to conduct inspections. They will be listed only on Indiana’s Risk Assessor registry and pay only the Risk Assessor application fee. Those wishing to be listed as both Lead Inspector and Lead Risk Assessor must take both refreshers.
Course acceptance:
- Accepted in Indiana and Illinois (all classes except worker).
- Approved by EPA, which satisfies requirements for: Florida, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, New York, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Wyoming.
Participants must pass the course exam with a minimum score of 70% to receive a certificate. Recertification generally does not require re-taking the state third-party exam.
State-by-state renewal timelines:
- Illinois: License renewed annually; refresher required every 3 years.
- Indiana: Training and license renewed every 3 years; Indiana allows a 12-month variance for training and a 6-month variance for licensing.
- EPA-only states: Training renewed every 3 years; no license required.
