Lead Risk Assessor (Initial)

Required Training for Identifying, Evaluating, and Documenting Lead-Based Paint Hazards

EMI classes are only available through the Indianapolis Ivy Tech campus at this time. For more information, contact Indianapolis-EMI@ivytech.edu.

The U.S. EPA and U.S. HUD define target housing as most residential structures built before 1978, and child-occupied facilities as pre-1978 buildings where children six or younger spend regular time. Individuals conducting full lead-based paint risk assessments in these environments must be accredited, and those performing HUD-regulated work must also hold HUD certification.

Under the supervision of the Ivy Tech Environmental Management Institute (EMI), this course provides the federally required training to perform lead hazard evaluations, identify potential exposure sources, and recommend appropriate control strategies. Certified Lead Risk Assessors also may conduct clearance examinations after abatement or interim controls, as permitted by HUD.

This course satisfies the training requirements for:

  • U.S. EPA Lead Risk Assessor accreditation (40 CFR 745 Subpart L)
  • U.S. HUD certification (24 CFR 35)

Comparable state-level licensing requirements

To complete the accreditation process, participants must meet state experience/education criteria, pass a third-party state exam, submit the appropriate application, and pay applicable licensing fees.

This course includes classroom instruction, hands-on sampling exercises, and a field visit to actual target housing.

Upon successful completion of the Lead Risk Assessor Initial course, participants will be able to:

Demonstrate proficiency in:

  • Methods for identifying lead, lead-based paint (LBP), and LBP hazards
  • Clearance requirements and techniques for conducting compliant clearance examinations
  • Federal, state, and local regulations governing LBP inspections and risk assessments
  • Legal liabilities and responsibilities associated with LBP work

Hands-on training will cover:

  • Planning and conducting a full lead-based paint risk assessment
  • Safely collecting paint chip samples
  • Conducting dust wipe sampling and performing clearance examinations
  • Applying field procedures in real target housing environments during a supervised site visit
