Certified Lead Abatement Supervisors must complete periodic refresher training to remain eligible to supervise lead-based paint abatement projects in target housing and child-occupied facilities. This EPA-approved refresher course, delivered under the Ivy Tech Environmental Management Institute (EMI), updates participants on regulatory changes, technical best practices, and supervisory responsibilities.
The course reviews:
- Changes in federal, state, and local regulations
- Key concepts from the initial supervisor course
- Updated methods used in lead abatement, containment, and cleanup
- Practical problem-solving and discussion with other LBP professionals
To maintain certification, supervisors must complete an approved refresher in each specialty they wish to practice. Participants who achieve a minimum exam score of 70% will receive a certificate for license renewal. Most states do not require retaking the third-party exam for recertification.
Course acceptance:
- Indiana and Illinois (all EMI courses except the worker course are accepted)
- EPA approval, which satisfies requirements in: Florida, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, New York, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Wyoming
State-by-state renewal timelines:
- Illinois: Renew your license annually; take the refresher every 3 years
- Indiana: Renew training and licensing every 3 years; Indiana provides up to 12 months variance for training and licensing
- EPA-only states: Renew training every 3 years (no state license required)
Late renewal may require retaking the initial course. Staying in compliance is essential to continue supervising abatement work legally.
