Lead Abatement Supervisor (Initial)

Accredited Training for Supervising Lead-Based Paint Abatement Projects

EMI classes are only available through the Indianapolis Ivy Tech campus at this time. For more information, contact Indianapolis-EMI@ivytech.edu.

Lead-based paint remains a significant hazard in target housing (pre-1978 homes) and child-occupied facilities where young children regularly spend time. Anyone supervising lead-based paint abatement in these environments must be accredited as a Lead Abatement Supervisor. Individuals wishing to become licensed lead abatement contractors must either obtain this credential themselves or employ a supervisor who holds it.

Delivered under the supervision of the Ivy Tech Environmental Management Institute (EMI), this course provides the federally required training for:

  • U.S. EPA Lead Abatement Supervisor accreditation (40 CFR 745 Subpart L)
  • U.S. HUD certification for abatement supervision (24 CFR 35)

While OSHA requires employers to ensure trained personnel are used on all construction projects disturbing lead, no specific training length is mandated. This EPA/HUD course meets and exceeds OSHA expectations for supervision. For non-abatement work, shorter courses—such as EMI’s Lead Abatement Worker or EPA Certified Lead Renovator (RRP) training—may be more appropriate.

To complete accreditation, participants must also satisfy state licensing requirements, including:

  • Meeting education and experience prerequisites
  • Completing a state application and paying licensing fees
  • Passing a third-party state licensing exam

This course is designed for professionals supervising abatement contractors, environmental consultants, property management teams, and those pursuing contractor licensure.

Upon successful completion of the Lead Abatement Supervisor Initial course, participants will be able to:

Demonstrate proficiency in:

  • Methods for identifying lead, lead-based paint (LBP), and LBP hazards
  • Safe work practices for handling and removing LBP
  • Clearance requirements and procedures for LBP abatement projects
  • Federal, state, and local regulations affecting LBP work
  • Legal liabilities associated with LBP abatement
  • Supervisory responsibilities for directing and monitoring abatement crews

Hands-on instruction includes:

  • Establishing proper containment for abatement work
  • Safely removing lead-based paint and performing compliant cleanup
  • Selecting appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Using PPE correctly during abatement operations
