HAZWOPER TSDF Worker (Initial)

EMI classes are only available through the Indianapolis Ivy Tech campus at this time. For more information, contact Indianapolis-EMI@ivytech.edu.

This course is delivered under the supervision of the Ivy Tech Environmental Management Institute (EMI), with partial support provided by the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) grant #ES06184.

Under OSHA’s HAZWOPER Standard (29 CFR 1910.120(p) and 1926.59(p)), employees at Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) permitted Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facilities (TSDFs) must complete specialized training. This training covers site hazards, safe work practices, facility-specific procedures, and emergency response planning for chemical releases.

The TSDF Worker course prepares participants to safely work in these environments and is also well-suited for employees involved in household hazardous waste programs, due to its strong emphasis on hazard awareness and exposure prevention.

Training covers:

  • Fundamentals of hazardous materials and waste identification
  • TSDF operational hazards
  • Emergency response plan requirements
  • Safe handling and storage of hazardous waste
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) selection and use

Upon successful completion of the HAZWOPER TSDF Worker Initial course, participants will be able to demonstrate competencies in:

  • Basics of hazardous materials and hazard classifications
  • Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) contingency plan requirements
  • Procedures for safely handling and managing hazardous wastes
  • Selection, use, and limitations of personal protective equipment (PPE) for TSDF operations
