This course is delivered under the supervision of the Ivy Tech Environmental Management Institute (EMI), with partial support from the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) grant #ES06184.
Under OSHA’s HAZWOPER standards (29 CFR 1910.120 and 29 CFR 1926.59), employees who may be exposed to hazardous materials or biological hazards during cleanup, TSDF operations, or emergency response incidents must complete periodic refresher training. For workers performing cleanup at government-recognized hazardous waste sites or working at RCRA-permitted TSDFs, OSHA requires an 8-hour annual refresher.
While OSHA does not specify refresher hours for emergency responders, EMI’s training fully covers all required elements of the HAZWOPER standard. As a participant in the Midwest Consortium for Hazardous Waste Worker Training—funded by NIEHS—EMI uses nationally recognized, top-quality instructional materials that are widely used across the country.
This refresher course reviews essential concepts from the initial course, updates participants on changing regulations and best practices, and reinforces learning through hands-on tabletop exercises and a final challenge exam.
