HazMat Shipping: DOT, IATA, IMDG

Essential Training for Proper Classification, Packaging, Labeling & Documentation of Hazardous Materials

EMI classes are only available through the Indianapolis Ivy Tech campus at this time. For more information, contact Indianapolis-EMI@ivytech.edu.

This course is delivered under the supervision of the Ivy Tech Environmental Management Institute (EMI). It provides a full-day, comprehensive introduction to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations governing the shipment of hazardous materials—also referred to internationally as “dangerous goods.”

The morning session introduces:

  • DOT hazardous materials classification systems
  • Connections to related OSHA, EPA, HMIS, and NFPA hazard categories

The afternoon session focuses on practical application, including how to:

  • Use DOT hazardous materials tables
  • Properly package, label, mark, and placard shipments
  • Prepare DOT shipping papers and waste manifests
  • Provide required emergency response information for transport

To meet DOT training requirements, participants must complete in-class examinations. In accordance with DOT guidance, participants must understand correct answers—not merely achieve a passing score—to be considered trained and competent.

This course supports compliance with DOT, IATA, and IMDG shipping rules and is ideal for shippers, waste handlers, facility managers, warehouse personnel, emergency responders, and environmental professionals.

Upon successful completion of the HazMat Shipping course, participants will be able to demonstrate proficiency in:

  • Classifications of hazardous materials under DOT, IATA, and IMDG systems
  • The HM-181 system and its impact on shipping and shipper responsibilities
  • Proper use of the DOT Emergency Response Guidebook
  • Waste manifesting procedures for hazardous materials
  • DOT shipping papers and recordkeeping requirements
  • DOT-compliant packaging, labeling, marking, and placarding of hazardous materials

Hands-on components include:

  • Practical exercises in classification and proper shipping name identification

A required certification exam will be administered at the end of the course.
