Asbestos Project Designer (Refresher)

Maintain Your Accreditation and Stay Current with Industry Standards

EMI Courses are only available through the Indianapolis Ivy Tech campus at this time. For more information, contact Indianapolis-EMI@ivytech.edu.

Asbestos Project Designers are responsible for developing detailed abatement specifications, drawings, and work strategies that ensure projects are safe, effective, and fully compliant with regulatory requirements. To maintain accreditation, designers must complete annual refresher training equivalent to an EPA-approved course. Although OSHA does not issue licenses, it does require ongoing asbestos training for workers, competent persons, inspectors, and designers—and this course satisfies those requirements.

Delivered under the supervision of the Ivy Tech Environmental Management Institute (Indianapolis), this refresher course provides:

  • Updates on new and evolving federal, state, and local asbestos regulations
  • Best practices in project design, work sequencing, containment strategies, and contractor oversight
  • A targeted review of essential concepts from the initial Project Designer course
  • Opportunities to analyze real-world design challenges and discuss solutions with peers and instructors

Upon successful completion of this refresher course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain recent updates to federal, state, and local asbestos regulations and how they impact project design requirements.
  • Review and apply core concepts from the initial Project Designer course, including hazard assessment, project planning, and specification development.
  • Evaluate and update abatement design documents, ensuring compliance with current regulatory, technical, and safety standards.
  • Select appropriate engineering controls, containment methods, and work practices for a variety of asbestos abatement scenarios.
  • Analyze real-world project design challenges and incorporate lessons learned from field experience.
  • Collaborate effectively with contractors, supervisors, inspectors, and building owners to support safe and compliant project delivery.
  • Demonstrate continued competency through successful completion of the required refresher examination.

Participants must achieve a minimum score of 70% on the course exam to receive certification, consistent with the requirements in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, and other states. Annual refresher training in this specialty is required to maintain licensure for designing asbestos abatement projects.

Ivy Tech’s refresher courses are accepted in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and all states that recognize EPA-approved training.
