Asbestos Management Planner (Refresher)

Maintain Your Accreditation and Stay Current with AHERA and EPA Requirements

Asbestos Management Planners are responsible for developing, updating, and overseeing asbestos management plans in K–12 schools and other regulated facilities. To remain accredited, planners must complete annual refresher training equivalent to an EPA-approved course. Although OSHA does not issue licenses, it does require ongoing training for workers, inspectors, competent persons, and planners—requirements that this course fully meets.

Delivered under the supervision of the Ivy Tech Environmental Management Institute (Indianapolis), this refresher course provides:

  • Updates on recent changes to federal, state, and local asbestos regulations
  • Best practices for evaluating inspection data and maintaining compliant management plans
  • A review of key concepts from the initial Management Planner training
  • Opportunities for discussion, Q&A, and knowledge sharing with other asbestos professionals

Upon successful completion of this refresher course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain recent updates to federal, state, and local asbestos regulations, including AHERA requirements that impact asbestos management plans.
  • Review and reinforce core concepts from the initial Management Planner training, including evaluating inspection data and identifying ACBM in school and commercial facilities.
  • Assess existing asbestos management plans for accuracy, compliance, and ongoing effectiveness.
  • Develop or update management plan recommendations that align with current regulatory expectations and best practices.
  • Interpret inspection reports, sampling results, and hazard assessments to make informed management decisions.
  • Collaborate effectively with building owners, administrators, and inspector teams to maintain safe and compliant asbestos programs.
  • Apply state-of-the-art practices for monitoring, reinspection scheduling, maintenance activities, and response actions.
  • Demonstrate continued competency through successful completion of the required refresher examination.

This is an in-person, 8-hour course ran monthly to help Asbestos Management Planners stay up to date on their license.

A score of 70% or higher on the course exam is required to receive certification, in alignment with requirements in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, and many other states. Completion of this refresher is necessary to maintain licensure for asbestos abatement oversight, management plan preparation, and related professional responsibilities.

Ivy Tech refresher courses are accepted in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and all states that recognize EPA-approved training.
