Asbestos Management Planner (Initial)

Prepare, Evaluate, and Oversee Asbestos Management Plans in Compliance with AHERA Requirements

Prerequisite: ASB2 (Asbestos Building Inspector) or equivalent

Under the EPA’s AHERA Asbestos in Schools Rule, all public, nonprofit private, and Department of Defense K–12 schools must maintain an up-to-date asbestos management plan for every building they own, lease, or use—even if no asbestos-containing building materials (ACBM) are present. Management planners play a key role in helping schools and building owners meet these federal requirements safely and effectively.

Delivered under the supervision of the Ivy Tech Environmental Management Institute (Indianapolis), this course prepares participants to:

  • Develop comprehensive asbestos management plans for buildings with or without ACBM
  • Evaluate inspection data and make informed recommendations for managing asbestos where present
  • Work directly with building owners and facility teams to maintain compliance and ensure ongoing safety
  • Reviewing inspection reports
    • Assessing asbestos hazards
    • Regulations affecting building owners
    • Selecting from the five Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) actions to safely and cost-effectively manage asbestos in buildings
    • Preparation of management plan, including a complete Operations and Maintenance program

Students will also receive hands-on training in plan preparation.
