Asbestos Building Inspector (Refresher)

Stay Compliant. Stay Certified. Stay Informed.

To maintain your asbestos inspection accreditation, annual refresher training is required. While OSHA does not issue licenses, it mandates ongoing training for inspectors, competent persons, and other asbestos professionals. This EPA-approved refresher course fully satisfies OSHA’s annual training requirement and ensures you continue to meet state licensing standards.

This course provides:

  • Current updates on federal, state, and local asbestos regulations

  • A review of inspection protocols and core content from the initial certification course

  • Best practices and advances in sampling, PPE usage, and inspection methodology

  • Opportunities to collaborate, problem-solve, and discuss real-world challenges with industry peers

Upon successful completion of this refresher course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain current federal, state, and local asbestos regulations and identify any recent updates that impact inspection practices.
  • Review and reinforce key concepts from the initial Asbestos Building Inspector course, including identification of ACM and PACM, inspection procedures, sampling methods, and reporting requirements.
  • Apply state-of-the-art inspection and sampling techniques in accordance with EPA- and OSHA-compliant protocols.
  • Demonstrate proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and updated safety practices relevant to asbestos inspection work.
  • Evaluate common field challenges and inspection scenarios using best practices discussed during the course.
  • Prepare compliant inspection documentation, including sample records, chain-of-custody forms, and final reports.
  • Assess their own readiness for continued licensure through successful completion of the required course examination.

This is an 8-hour refresher, which is required for yearly license renewal. It is held in person at the EMI labs at Ivy Tech Indianapolis - Lawrence campus.

Training Deadline Reminder

Refresher training must be completed on time to avoid lapses in accreditation. Indiana requires completion within 18 months of your last valid training—otherwise, you must repeat the initial course. You may not perform asbestos inspection work if your license has expired.

To remain licensed/accredited to conduct asbestos abatement, inspections, or to prepare management plans, you must complete an approved refresher course in each specialty. This is for Building Inspectors.

Participants must earn a minimum score of 70% on the course exam to receive certification, as required in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, and several other states. Successful completion allows you to maintain your existing asbestos inspector license/accreditation.

Ivy Tech refresher certifications are accepted in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and any state that recognizes EPA-approved training.
