Where Wonder Begins: Designing Inspiring ECE Math & Science Classroom Learning Centers

Where Wonder Begins

This course explores how intentional, play-based math and science experiences support young children's cognitive development, inquiry, language, and problem-solving skills. Participants will examine the characteristics of developmentally appropriate math and science learning centers, evaluate classroom environments using best practices, and learn how thoughtfully designed centers encourage exploration, discovery, and differentiated learning for all children. Participants will also develop strategies for extending children's thinking through intentional teaching practices, including open-ended questioning, mathematical and scientific vocabulary, observation, and scaffolding. By the end of the course, participants will design engaging math and science learning centers and create an action plan to enhance a classroom environment through reflective practice, intentional planning, and ongoing observation of children's learning. This is a hands-on training and participants will receive related instructional materials to take back to use in their own educational environments.

By participating in this training, you will learn how to create meaningful math and science experiences that inspire curiosity, exploration, and critical thinking in young children. You'll discover practical strategies for designing engaging learning environments and using everyday interactions to deepen children's understanding of mathematical and scientific concepts.

After completing this course, you'll be able to:

  • Understand how play-based math and science experiences support children's cognitive development, problem-solving skills, and natural curiosity.
  • Identify the key features of effective, developmentally appropriate math and science learning centers.
  • Create engaging learning environments that encourage hands-on exploration, inquiry, and discovery for all learners.
  • Use intentional teaching practices, including questioning, vocabulary development, and scaffolding techniques, to extend children's thinking and learning.
  • Observe and assess children's learning to guide instruction and enhance classroom experiences.
  • Develop a practical plan for improving math and science learning opportunities through reflection, observation, and continuous improvement.

This training is designed for early childhood professionals who want to strengthen their ability to create engaging, developmentally appropriate math and science learning experiences for young children.

This course is ideal for:

  • Preschool teachers and assistant teachers
  • Pre-K educators
  • Child care providers
