What You'll Learn

Students in Ivy Tech's Chemistry program get hands-on lab experience, learning about the ways that chemicals make up everything that people interact with daily. The program offers small classes with plenty of opportunities for research and one-on-one instruction.

Using state of the art equipment and technology, students gain foundational skills, competencies and knowledge to start a career in chemistry or to transfer to a four-year college or university. The program's topics of focus include:

Career Options

The Chemistry program at Ivy Tech prepares students for careers working in manufacturing, laboratories or in the medical field. Among the careers graduates can pursue are:

  • Chemical technician
  • Lab technician
  • Quality assurance technician
  • Analytical technician

Transfer as a Junior

Graduates of the Associate of Science in Chemistry degree program also have the foundation to transfer to earn a bachelor's degree, if desired. Given the high demand in fields requiring Chemistry knowledge, some employers may provide financial assistance for Ivy Tech Associate of Science in Chemistry graduates to earn that additional credential.

Associate Degree – Transferable Degree

  • The Ivy Tech Associate of Science (AS) in Chemistry degree program helps students explore how the chemical world works together to create everything we experience each day. It features hands-on lab experience using state-of-the-art equipment and technology.

    The program focuses on topics such as:

    • Organic chemistry
    • Atomic structure
    • Physical chemistry
    • Quantitative analysis

    Graduates can begin a career in chemistry or transfer to a four-year institution to earn a bachelor's degree. Students who begin a job after earning an associate degree may be able to pursue their four-year degree while they work. In some cases, employers will help pay for education to earn a bachelor's degree.

    Transfer as a Junior

    Graduates of the Chemistry AS degree program can also choose to transfer to a four-year college or university, where they can earn a bachelor's degree in chemistry.

    The chemistry associate degree is designated as a TSAP program (which stands for “Transfer Single Articulation Pathway”). The program enables students to transfer to Indiana public four-year institutions with automatic junior status. You can save upward of $10,000 by completing your first two years at Ivy Tech and then transferring to a four-year college.

    Our chemistry program has partnerships with many four-year universities and colleges so you can seamlessly transfer without losing your credits or time. Talk to our transfer advocates for information about continuing your education after completing your AS in Chemistry degree at Ivy Tech.

    Note that admission is not guaranteed just by enrolling in the Associate of Science in Chemistry program. You will need to be admitted to the institution you intend to transfer to.

    Ivy Tech's AS in Chemistry degree program requires 60 credit hours, or four semesters, to complete.

    Courses

    The 60 credit hours required to graduate include:

    • 26 program-specific course credits
    • 1 student success credit (college requirement)

Chemistry is offered at 4 Ivy Tech locations in Indiana. Each location offers a unique combination of certificate and degree options:

Prerequisite Courses for Chemistry

Students coming to Ivy Tech with their high school diploma or equivalent can start straight into the degree program without completing any prerequisite courses as long as they are considered college ready by the knowledge assessment.

No Expiration of Credits

There is no expiration date for course credits that were earned in previous years from Ivy Tech Community College.

Transfer Credit for Prerequisite Courses

Prerequisite courses completed at colleges other than Ivy Tech will only be considered for general education selection points if transfer credit has been awarded and courses appear on the Ivy Tech transcript prior to the application deadline.

TR grades are not recognized by the online application. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that transfer credit has been awarded and that TR grades are updated to transfer letter grades (TA, TB, TC) on their Ivy Tech transcript.

It is recommended that college transcripts be submitted to the Registrar’s office for evaluation and transfer credit at least 4 weeks prior to the program application deadline to ensure adequate time for processing.

Aaron Goodpastor received his Bachelor’s degree from Ball State University in 2006 and PhD from Miami University (OH) in 2011. He co-chaired the committee that created the transfer-as-a-junior chemistry degree for the state. He also served as the chair of the curriculum committee that outlined the curriculum for students to be awarded the chemistry degree from Ivy Tech.

Ivy Tech has the ability to adequately train students in the first two years of their chemistry education. The small class sizes and having classes taught by instructors allow Ivy Tech faculty to develop relationships with their students and provide individualized instruction which allows students in the chemistry program to have an excellent foundation to continue on to a 4-year institution to obtain a bachelor’s degree or to start a career.
