How to Apply For Dual Credit Classes in High School

GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL WITH COLLEGE CREDIT

DUAL CREDIT COURSES

Dual Credit courses are when a high school student takes Ivy Tech classes at their high school during the regular school day by certified high school teachers at no cost to students. Upon passing a class, students receive college credit and fulfill a high school course requirement. That’s why it’s called Dual Credit—you get credit toward both high school and college graduation at the same time. Learn More about Dual Credit

Getting started with Ivy Tech Dual Credit courses is easy. Just follow the steps outlined below.

Dual Credit vs. Dual Enrollment

Dual Credit students earn both high school and college credit for Ivy Tech classes taken at their school, while Dual Enrollment students actually enroll in Ivy Tech and only earn college credit for their classes. Trying to figure out if Dual Credit or Dual Enrollment is best for you?

STEPS TO APPLY FOR DUAL CREDIT

  • Participating Dual Credit High Schools in Indiana

Ivy Tech operates one of the largest dual credit programs in the country and is accredited by the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP)*.

We partner with over 450 Indiana high schools and career centers to offer dual credit courses to students. Check out the directory below to see if your high school participates in the Ivy Tech dual credit program.

    Check with Your Counselor

Don't see your high school listed? Talk to your high school counselor to find out if your high school offers Ivy Tech dual credit courses.

    * NACEP is a national accrediting body that ensures both the quality of college in high school programming, as well as the alignment of this programming with on-campus academic policies and procedures.

  • Talk to Your Counselor

If you'd like to start taking Ivy Tech dual credit courses, talk to your high school counselor and let them know you are interested. They’ll let you know what courses are available at your high school and help you determine if you qualify to take the courses based on college readiness standards.

  • APPLY NOW

Apply to the Dual Credit Program on DualEnroll.com

    • Students apply to the Dual Credit program by creating a new student account on the DualEnroll website. DualEnroll is a self-registration platform where you will apply and register for your dual credit coursework.
    • Students only need to complete the DualEnroll application once in their high school career.

    What You'll Need

    • The student’s Social Security Number is required when filling out the application. Students without a Social Security Number should complete the DualEnroll.com application and email 14centralsupport@ivytech.edu when they get to the Social Security Number section.
    • The student's parent or guardian's contact information, including address, email, and phone number.
    • A personal email (different from parent/guardian’s email) to include on the application. A personal email is preferred over a high school email account.

  • Look Out for Confirmation Emails

    1. Email #1 – Once you complete the DualEnroll application, you will receive an email from DuelEnroll.com requesting you confirm your new account. In that email click the "Confirm my account" link. This email should arrive within minutes of submitting the application.
    2. Email #2 – After you have confirmed your account, you will immediately get a confirmation email that your DualEnroll.com account has been activated.
    3. Email #3 – You will receive a third email from DualEnroll.com once your application has been processed, usually about a day later. Welcome to Ivy Tech! This email will contain your student identification number (also known as your C#) and your Ivy Tech username and outline your next steps. If you don't receive this welcome email, check your “junk mail” or spam folder.

    Look Out for a Letter

You will also receive a letter in the mail at the address that was provided on the application containing your Ivy Tech student identification number (otherwise known as your C#). If you haven't received a letter within two weeks, please contact your local Dual Credit representative.

Note the confirmation email and letter do NOT guarantee that you will receive college credit.

  • College Readiness

Some dual credit courses require students to submit qualifying score(s) before they are deemed “college-ready.” Depending on the course, this college-ready score could be:

    • A PSAT 10 score, SAT score, or ACT score
    • A cumulative GPA of 2.6 or higher for juniors and seniors
      NOTE: GPA alone will not qualify students for: MATH 135, 136, 137, 201, 211, 212, CHEM 101, PHYS 101, or SDEV 140.

    Knowledge Assessment

If you do not have previous college credit, an ACT, SAT or PSAT score, or a cumulative high school GPA that satisfies the assessment requirement, you will need to complete the Knowledge Assessment. The Knowledge Assessment assesses your level in reading, writing, and mathematics. The assessment is free and your score will be accepted up to four years after you take the assessment.

To learn how to access Knowledge Assessment through your student MyIvy account to meet prerequisite requirements for dual credit courses, watch this helpful video tutorial:

    Prerequisites

A prerequisite is a requirement that a student must have taken prior to enrolling in a specific course or program. Some dual credit courses require students to take prerequisites before they can register for a course. Prerequisites vary by course and some courses do not have prerequisites, so it’s important to work with a high school or Ivy Tech staff member who can assist you.

See the Dual Credit Prerequisite Chart for a complete list of the prerequisite courses and qualifying scores for each dual credit course.

  • Register for Classes

You will immediately make course registration requests on DualEnroll.com once your account is processed. The courses available to you are determined by what’s offered at your home high school and applicable career center.
