GUEST STUDENT PROGRAM DETAILS
-
Available Classes
Guest students can take courses on any subject within any academic program that doesn’t have selective admission. We offer 1,400+ classes in more than 70 academic programs! Many guest students take general education courses (like those associated with the Indiana College Core) at Ivy Tech (at lower tuition) and then transfer the credits to their home college to apply toward their bachelor’s degree. Others need a class that isn’t currently offered at their home college and take a summer class to prepare for the fall semester.
You can choose classes that meet in-person or virtually (meet via live video) at your local Ivy Tech or through our online format, where you work more independently, with no scheduled class meeting times. Learn more about class formats here
Whatever your need is, chances are we’ve got you covered (and for lower tuition than your home college!).
-
Course Equivalencies
Before enrolling in courses at Ivy Tech, it is important to find out which course credits may transfer to or from other institutions. Use this helpful tool to find out how courses you have taken or plan to take may transfer to another college or university for credit.
-
What is the Core Transfer Library?
The Core Transfer Library is a list of 88 courses that are pre-approved for transfer between all Indiana public college and university campuses, in addition to six independent colleges and universities (assuming adequate grades were earned). Core Transfer Library courses will meet the general or free elective requirements of undergraduate degree programs and most will also count towards degree program requirements, if an equivalent course is taught at the four-year campus you plan to attend.
Other Courses
Ivy Tech does offer courses that may transfer to a select set or even a single college or university. See your academic advisor to learn more about these courses.
-
Financial Aid
Ivy Tech does not offer financial aid to guest students.
Transfer Credit Approval
Be sure to speak with your advisor at your home institution to make sure you are taking a course that will transfer. Ivy Tech cannot guarantee the transferability of courses to your home institution.
Do You Qualify as a Guest Student?
- Guest students must be in good academic standing at their home institution.
- You must be attending another college institution. If you have no previous college credit and are not currently a full-time student at another institution, you do not qualify as a guest student.
Guest Student Application
- The application must be completed in order to register for classes. Allow up to 10 business days after application submission before you register for classes.
- Your guest student application is good for one semester. Every semester you wish to take classes as a guest student, you will need to fill out the application again.
- Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
- Be sure to submit which Ivy Tech class(es) you wish to take. You must receive permission for each class that you wish to enroll in.
- Guest students must be in good academic standing at their home institution as determined by the home institution's policies. Academic standing will be verified on the Guest Student Application by the student checking the box on the application that they are in good academic standing at their home institution. No separate documentation is required.
- Current international students must also submit a copy of page 1 of their form I-20.
- If you are a previous Ivy Tech student, please submit your Ivy Tech Student ID number (C number).
GI Bill Benefits
- You may be able to use your GI Bill benefits to pay for a course taken as a guest student. The course must be transferable and apply to your degree plan.
- If you plan to use GI Bill benefits as a guest student, contact Veteran Services at your home college and request a “parent letter” be sent to Veteran Services at the Ivy Tech location where you are registered. Your "parent" school is the institution that has your eligibility information and official degree plan and is on record with the VA. All other schools are "secondary."
- You should also visit the Ivy Tech Veteran Services office to confirm that your benefits have been applied.
-
Taking courses at Ivy Tech to transfer credits back to your home college or university is easy. Before you apply, there are two things to do:
Search for Courses
Guest students can take any class for which they meet the prerequisites. On the guest student application, you’ll be asked to confirm that you meet the prerequisites for the course you want to take.
Ivy Tech offers thousands of courses at 38 locations around the state and online each semester. Search upcoming classes to see what’s available.
Make Sure Your Credits Will Transfer
Every college and university has its own requirements for accepting transfer credits. Before you apply, check with your advisor at your home institution to make sure the Ivy Tech course you plan to take will transfer. Ivy Tech cannot guarantee that another institution will accept the course for credit.
Transferring Credit to an Indiana School
TransferIN.net is a website managed by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. TransferIN can help you figure out how to transfer your credits to another institution. Each school has unique transfer requirements; however, TransferIN has developed step-by-step guides that cover the basic requirements most schools follow, so you can ask the right questions and make better decisions.
