Ivy Tech Community College received the J. Edgar Hoover Scholarship, a $5,000 award presented by the Society of Former Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) at its annual conference in Indianapolis on October 17.
The award will support criminal justice students at Ivy Tech Indianapolis by establishing a Criminal Justice Club. As part of the club, the scholarship funds will help create opportunities for students to connect with criminal justice professionals, explore career pathways and participate in leadership and professional development activities.
"This is an honor for the program and the campus, and we are appreciative of this recognition," Tilmer Paulson, the criminal justice program chair at Ivy Tech Indianapolis, said. "The students, faculty and curriculum committee work tirelessly to ensure those who will be serving our communities, keeping them safe and upholding justice are well prepared."
The Criminal Justice Club aims to connect classroom learning with professional experiences through guest speakers, agency tours, career panels, community service projects and other activities.
"Establishing a Criminal Justice Club will give our students opportunities to take what they learn in the classroom and connect it to the realities of the profession," Paulson said. "Our primary goal with this club is to help students see themselves not just as future graduates and transfers, but as future professionals who are actively preparing to contribute to their communities."
Paulson accepted the award on behalf of Ivy Tech Indianapolis.
"This award is an investment in our students and a recognition of their hard work, resilience and dedication,” Paulson said of receiving the award. “Our students are the most important part of what makes this program special. They bring a genuine interest in the field, a willingness to learn and explore, a commitment to making a difference in our communities, and upholding justice.”
