Pike County Leadership Lunch & Learns Planned

The Pike County Chamber of Commerce and the Elmer Buchta Technology Center are partnering with Ivy+ Career Link at Ivy Tech Community College, to offer a series of Leadership Lunch & Learn Sessions this fall. 

The sessions, which will be held at the Elmer Buchta Technology Center, are designed for employers, community members, and partner organizations, to develop skillsets of good leaders.

All sessions are on Fridays, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. EDT. Cost of the workshops are $25 each, with $12 additional if participants want to buy lunch. To register go to link.ivytech.edu/lunchandlearn.

Sessions will include:

Session 1

September 25: Developing Effective Communication Skills

Constant, consistent, and purposeful communication is a hallmark of great teams. In this module, participants will develop in their understanding of how people receive information differently and how to adjust their communication based on the audience and situation.

Session 2

October 20: Setting Priorities/Setting Goals/Time Management

Time management is really priority management and requires thoughtful, strategic planning. This module explores the areas where leaders lose productivity, introduces efficient work schedules and rhythm, and helps participants determine what is truly important to accomplish.

Session 3

November 13: Problem Solving and Decision Making

Effective problem solving can be approached through a disciplined multi-step process that leads to good analysis and decision making. In this module, participants learn the seven steps of problem solving with an emphasis on asking analytical, open-ended questions at each step.

Trainer for the event is Deborah Dewey, who has over 30 years of experience in senior leadership positions, including five president assignments. Formerly was the executive director of Ivy+ Career Link at Ivy Tech Evansville. She has served as president of Missouri American Water, which provides water or sewer services to 1.5 million people. She was previously president of Indiana and Michigan American Water and served as president of the Growth Alliance for Grater Evansville, an economic development and business incubation organization. She also served as president of Western Kentucky Energy, leading 500 employees in the transition from a nonprofit electric cooperative to an investor-owned power generation subsidiary.

She has managed and owned a construction and supply company and has provided consulting services in the areas of acquisition integration, strategic planning and cost optimization. She began her career at Westinghouse Electric Corp., where she held positions in design engineering, marketing, field services and strategic planning; and at General Electric Corp., leading more than 1,100 employees for the large electrical generator business.

Dewey holds a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering and an M.B.A.
