SOUTH BEND, Ind. — In recognition of the Week of the Young Child® (April 11–17, 2026), Ivy Tech Community College South Bend-Elkhart is highlighting its commitment to preparing and supporting early childhood educators—while strengthening the region’s childcare workforce.
The national observance, designated by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, brings attention to the critical importance of early learning experiences and the professionals who support young children and families.
Preparing Educators for Impact
Ivy Tech’s Early Childhood Education program equips students to support children from infancy through age 8 by combining research-based instruction with hands-on experience in real classroom settings.
Students gain expertise in:
- Child development across physical, social, emotional, and cognitive domains
- Creating safe, engaging learning environments
- Curriculum planning and family engagement
- Real-world practicum experiences in childcare centers and schools
The program offers flexible, stackable pathways, including:
- Associate degrees (AAS and AS)
- Technical certificates and Child Development Associate (CDA) preparation
- A U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship option
Graduates are prepared for in-demand roles such as preschool teachers, para-educators, childcare providers, and program directors, with a median reported salary of approximately $40,000.
Expanding Access and Strengthening the Workforce
Ivy Tech South Bend-Elkhart is also leading innovative efforts to expand access to early childhood credentials. A recent bilingual cohort has already resulted in 63 CDA credentials awarded, helping remove language barriers and strengthen the region’s ability to serve diverse families.
Through partnerships and financial supports like the TEACH Early Childhood® Indiana Scholarship, many students are able to complete credentials with significantly reduced cost—helping address workforce shortages and improve retention in the field.
Supporting Current Educators in the Field
In addition to preparing future educators, Ivy Tech faculty are actively supporting those already working in early childhood settings.
On March 28, 2026, Early Childhood Education faculty hosted a professional development training at the Elkhart County Campus, serving more than 90 early childhood educators from across the region. The training focused on strengthening classroom practices, improving child outcomes, and supporting educator success.
“This work is about more than preparing students—it’s about supporting the entire early childhood ecosystem,” said Patrick Englert, Chancellor of Ivy Tech South Bend-Elkhart. “When we invest in educators, we invest in children, families, and the long-term strength of our communities.”
Building a Stronger Future for Children and Families
Research consistently shows that children who participate in high-quality early childhood programs are more likely to succeed in school, build healthy lives, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
Through education, training, and community engagement, Ivy Tech South Bend-Elkhart is helping ensure that more children in northern Indiana have access to the strong start they deserve.
This work is about more than preparing students—it’s about supporting the entire early childhood ecosystem. When we invest in educators, we invest in children, families, and the long-term strength of our communities.
