A Bit About Me: Who are you? What is your current position? How long have you been with Ivy Tech, and have you held any other roles here?

I have been a servant educator for over 25 years. My professional journey began in early intervention as a developmental therapist, working with young children and their families through Indiana’s First Steps program. This experience laid the foundation for my commitment to supporting developmental growth and strong family partnerships. During that time, I was hired as an adjunct instructor in the Early Childhood Education Program at Ivy Tech Community College in Indianapolis. That opportunity ignited my passion for adult education and eventually led to a full-time teaching role, which has given me 27 years with Ivy Tech. Over the past four years, I have served as Program Chair, a leadership position that has provided a broader lens on program development, faculty support, curriculum alignment, and student success.

I was raised in a small steel town in southwestern Pennsylvania as the youngest of six children. My stay-at-home mother modeled compassion and empathy, values that continue to guide my personal and professional life. My father, a crane operator at the local steel mill, demonstrated persistence, loyalty, and work-life balance; qualities I carry with me to this day. From an early age, I learned the importance of service, humility, and perseverance.

Inspired by my older sister, the first in our family to attend college, I also pursued higher education and ventured beyond my hometown. I earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and later completed a master’s degree in special education. While in college, I met my husband, also an educator, and together we built a life dedicated to service and learning. The rhythm of the academic calendar has allowed us to enjoy meaningful travel and time for renewal, further enriching our shared commitment to education.

What is something people might be surprised to learn about your job?

Program leadership is often viewed as a role focused on management and logistics, but what I enjoy most is the opportunity to help shape the program's future alongside faculty, students, and community partners. The work is always evolving, which creates endless opportunities for innovation, collaboration, and growth.

What makes working at Ivy Tech meaningful to you?

Ivy Tech has been my second family for over 25 years.  I look forward to working with students because I help them meet their goals and find value in their lives. I love working with colleagues whom I call friends. We find creative and fun ways to make our careers and jobs enjoyable and rewarding.  Reflecting on these relationships and experiences fills me with gratitude and pride.

If you could swap jobs with someone at Ivy Tech for a day, who would it be and why?

I would swap with someone in admissions because that is often a student’s first interaction with Ivy Tech. The first person a student meets can leave a lasting impression, and I would enjoy being part of that experience. I enjoy meeting new people and learning about their goals, interests, and aspirations.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

When I am not Ivy Tech’ing, I like to cook and entertain friends and family. I like to travel and am especially drawn to sunny spots with water. I enjoy working in my yard and gardening.

What is currently in your headphones? (Music, podcasts, audiobooks, etc.)

Some books I recently read were about women and their life journeys, and several were historical novels. Lilac Girls and The Golden Doves by Martha Hall Kelly, along with Lady Tan’s Circle of Women by Lisa See, all feature women of strength, resilience, and courage despite challenging circumstances. I enjoy stories that explore human connection, perseverance, and personal growth because they remind me of the importance of empathy and community in life.

What is the Employee Spotlight?

The Monthly Employee Spotlight is an initiative by the Human Resources and Administration team at Ivy Tech Indianapolis designed to celebrate the individuals who contribute to our campus' vibrant and collaborative environment. Each month, an employee is randomly selected for recognition. With the support of their vice chancellor, the selected individual shares insights about their role, background, and personal motivations, fostering a deeper connection within our community.

This initiative replaced the “Employee of the Month” program, which faced challenges despite its positive intent. Inspired by employee feedback, the spotlight fosters connection and understanding across all departments, highlighting the unique contributions of faculty and staff. It’s a chance to celebrate the people who make our campus thrive.

By sharing these spotlights, we aim to highlight the diversity of roles and talents within our campus while aligning with Ivy Tech's academic program spotlights. These features provide a unique opportunity for employees to connect and build camaraderie, showcasing the people who make Ivy Tech Indianapolis a remarkable place to work and learn.
