Days of Service Mask Making at Home

Dates: All week

Give back this spring during the Ivy Tech Days of Service! Students looking for a project to do at home can pick up a mask-making kit at the Bloomington campus a make some masks to be donated to community organizations in Bloomington. The mask kits are easy to put together, only need some simple sewing (either by hand or with a sewing machine) and come will all needed supplies.   Mask kits will be available March 19th through 26th. Visit the main entrance lobby of the Bloomington campus to pick up yours! *The American Red Cross is screening all blood donations for COVID-19 antibodies. Results will be posted to donor accounts two weeks post-donation. If a donation does test positive for COVID-19 antibodies, that donation can be used by hospitals to treat current COVID-19 patients through a treatment called convalescent plasma. There is no deferral period for most COVID-19 vaccines. But we do ask the donor to inform our staff in health histories the name of the manufacturer.

Kindred Hospice “Quarantine Kits” Packing Event

Date: March 30

Kindred Hospice provides care and support in the most appropriate care setting for those recovering from illness or injury. They support your recovery from aggressive, intensive care in a hospital setting, to skilled nursing visits in the comfort of your home.  Join Student Life for a socially distanced service event on campus. Students will be required to wear masks. Gloves will also be provided while packing the Quarantine Kits for Kindred Hospice.  Each kit will contain: snacks, coloring book, colored pencils, chap stick, fuzzy socks, and activities. We'll also be signing 100 Birthday cards for patients and letters to veterans. Each participant will receive a Days of Service t-shirt and a box lunch at the end of the event.  This event will be taking place outside on the IFC patio (corner of Illinois and Fall Creek streets), located through the double doors next to the Fall Creek Cafe. Dress appropriately for the weather. In case of inclement weather, event will be moved inside.

Alabaster Jar Indy Snack Pack Event

Alabaster Jar's mission is to help women and underage girls in the sex industry experience Jesus’ love by interacting with them in the most common venues of exploitation in Central Indiana, such as strip clubs, social media and on the streets. A simple message of grace and beautiful exchange, conveyed with every random act of kindness given. Join Student Life for a socially distanced service event on campus. Letter Writing with Samaritan Caregivers

Samaritan Caregivers "provides individuals aged 65 and older free independent support. Through transportation, companionship, and personal shopping." The pandemic has made it harder for organizations like Samaritan Caregivers and its clients alike to provide and receive services and companionship. This year for Days of Service we'd like to invite you to pick a few clients to write a letter to! Student Life will provide you with blank cards, envelopes, and names (we can either mail these or you can pick them up from the Kokomo campus!)   Write your letter/note in the cards, put the appropriate name on the outer envelope, then place them all in the provided large envelope and drop them in the mail back to campus by April 9. Samaritan Caregivers will complete addressing the envelops to the recipients and send the cards!    All students, faculty, and staff who return their cards will receive a free Ivy Tech Days of Service t-shirt!

Partnering with 4 organizations, participants will have the choice of writing to local healthcare professionals working with COVID-19, elderly who may not have an immediate community, deployed troops, and children who are currently hospitalized. Spring Into Action: Friends Fighting Hunger

Student Government Association and Student Life are collaborating on this year’s Ivy Tech Days of Service.  The Sellersburg campus will host two drive-thru collection events where students, faculty and staff will donate canned goods/toiletries/etc. in exchange for a Special Edition Tee and Spring Goodie Bag.  The items collected will be donated to a regional homeless outreach organization, We the People of New Albany. As part of service efforts SGA will host a distribution day with We the People of New Albany and assist with serving a meal to the homeless.
